❗❗We will be running a series on the harm alcohol consumption can contribute to ones health.

Many a person are fast to tell you alcohol is good for the heart💖. Half of these persons have not even taken time to read or research the consequences of alcohol consumption🤷.

Conversations like;

𝕄𝕖: Sir, do you take alcohol?

𝕄𝕣 𝔸: Not really. Just take one or two bottles a day especially when I'm with friends.

Is a usual occurrence .

🖌️ Modest alcohol use contributes to over 60 acute and chronic health conditions.

🖌️ Experts believe that no level of alcohol consumption improves health.

🖌️ In general, even moderate alcohol consumption considerably increases the overall risk of mortality, especially among young individuals.

🖌️ We will be looking at the following disease state;

🔹Since 1995, many studies have shown that consuming any amount of alcohol can increase the risk of cancer.

🔹Even though most of the research did not specify a threshold for the emergence of carcinogenetic (ability to cause cancer) effects from alcohol and suggested that the best way to avoid carcinogenicity was to abstain from alcohol consumption.

🔹Alcohol has been demonstrated to directly increase the risk of gastrointestinal (GI) cancers and indirectly contributing to the alteration of DNA strands and tumor formation (oncogenesis).

🔹Alcohol can also worsen other cancer causing toxins in the body thereby elevating the potency of these substances in causing cancer.

🔹Alcohol also increases the risk of cancer by lowering blood levels of antioxidants such as 𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧 𝐀 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐄, 𝐙𝐢𝐧𝐜 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐫𝐨𝐧, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐁 𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐜𝐢𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞 ( 𝐯𝐢𝐭 𝐁𝟏).

🔹Finally, alcohol increases the risk of cancer progression by weakening the immune system.

❌There is association between consumption of alcohol and cancers of the lung, throat, esophagus, stomach, liver, re**um and breast among women. The probability of incidence is higher in female alcohol users than males, with modest alcohol intake elevating the likelihood of breast cancer contraction among women.

ＩＮＳＯＭＮＩＡ

The word 𝐈𝐍𝐒𝐎𝐌𝐍𝐈𝐀 is a disorder characterized by inability to sleep or a total lack of sleep. It could also mean dissatisfaction with the amount and /or quality of the sleep.

The presenting complaints are often that of difficulties falling asleep in spite of being in bed, waking up often during the night and having trouble going back to sleep, waking up too early in the morning or having an unrefreshing sleep.

Most people also find it difficult to concentrate during the day because they are tired and irritable during the day. They also find it hard to nap in the day even though they are tired.

These symptoms can last for months or sometimes years.

𝙃𝙊𝙒 𝙈𝙐𝘾𝙃 𝙎𝙇𝙀𝙀𝙋 𝘿𝙊 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙉𝙀𝙀𝘿

Everyone needs different amount of sleep. On the average, we need

Adult: 7 to 9 hours

Children: 9 to 13 hours

Toddler's and babies: 12 to 17 hours

𝗖𝗔𝗨𝗦𝗘𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗜𝗡𝗦𝗢𝗠𝗡𝗜𝗔

🔻Age

🔻Stress, anxiety or depression

🔻Sleep Apnea

🔻Noise

🔻A room that's too hot or cold

🔻Uncomfortable beds

🔻Alcohol, caffeine, or ni****ne

🔻Recreational drugs like co***ne or ecstasy

🔻Jet lag

🔻Shift work

🔻Most importantly, Abuse of prescription medications for sleep

🔻Certain illness.

𝙒𝙃𝘼𝙏 𝘾𝘼𝙉 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝘿𝙊

🔺Go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday. Only go to bed when you feel tired.
Relax at least 1 hour before bed - reading a book.

🔺Make sure the your bed room is dark and quiet- use thick curtains, blinds and eye mask or ear plugs

🔺Exercise regularly during the day.

🔺Make sure your mattress, pillow and bed covers are comfortable

𝙒𝙃𝘼𝙏 𝙔𝙊𝙐 𝙎𝙃𝙊𝙐𝙇𝘿𝙉'𝙏 𝘿𝙊

🔸Do not smoke or drink alcohol, tea or coffee at least 6 hours before going to bed.

🔸Do not eat a big meal late at night

🔸Do not exercise at least four hours before bed.

🔸Do not watch television or use devices right before going to bed - the bright light makes you more awake.

🔸Do not nap during the day.

🔸Maintain your night sleep routine.

🔸Do not drive when you feel sleepy.

🔸Speak to your Pharmacist about Over-the-counter sleep aids which can help you.

🔸Consult your Doctor when all these life style changes have been implemented and still no changes for evaluation in your health

❌ That a prescription drug eg 𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐧 was prescribed for you previously doesn't mean you should continue with it. These drugs have the ability to make you ultimately dependent on them and then the right dose which used to make you sleep will no longer give effect (Tolerance).

The fluoroquinolones vs divalent and trivalent cations containing drugs. 🙂

The above sound big for especially those that aren't science inclined. Wait until you find out they are drugs you may have taken at least once this year.

Fluoroquinolones examples are (ciprotab), , , etc. These are antibiotics used in treatment infection caused by organisms.

Divalent cations include; Ca2+, Mg2+, while Trivalent cations include; Al3+ and Fe3+ ( remember your chemistry for science students😋)

When fluoroquinolones (egs mentioned above) are taken together with drugs like or any blood build supplement containing iron (Fe3+) or supplement or even most antacids like , , of magnesia, etc containing Al3+ and Mg2+; a strong complex is formed which makes drug not to be well absorbed up to 60-70% . Reduced absorption means the drug won't be available to work. Too bad but can lead to treatment failure.

You see many a time we all take these antibiotics with like we popularly call them😁.

Interaction between cardiac protective low dose Aspirin ( VASOPRIN) and Ibuprofen and Naproxen.

The function of is to help prevent blood clot which can cause stroke or heart attack especially in individual with high blood pressure and those with coronary heart disease.

Ibuprofen and Naproxen when taken along with VASOPRIN, hinders the protective effect of VASOPRIN on the heart.

Patients and people on VASOPRIN should NOT take Ibuprofen and Naproxen on regular basis.

Ensure to speak to your pharmacist when next you want to get a painkiller and you are on VASOPRIN.

Interactions between drugs can lead to serious unwanted effects or to a reduction in the expected treatment effects of some drugs substances.

An average person takes pain killers and drugs for flu most times without prescription. Our elderlies are also prone to drug interactions because many a time they have a minimum of five drugs being prescribed for them. It is worthy to note that many medications bought without prescription other wise called over the counter (OTC) drugs are easily prone to abuse that can lead to DRUG-DRUG interaction.

The first to be discussed in this is
CONCOMITANT USE OF NSAIDS 💊💊💊 (Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Examples include Diclofenac, Ibuprofen, Meloxicam, Ketoprofen, Naproxen, Dexketoprofen, Piroxicam (Felvin).

Taking two or more of these above mentioned drugs together can lead to severe abdominal (GIT) ulceration with severe bleeding. This is because each of these drugs have the potential of causing ulceration.

Therefore combining them worsens the ulceration and hence bleeding. It is worthy to know that many people develop ulceration because of abuse of pain killers.

❗WHAT TO DO???

When next you walk into a pharmacy to get a PAIN KILLER , always speak to your pharmacist about your previous ulcer history even if it has been 20 years you had it last. Some medications can trigger it again.
