Acute Renal Failure (AKI) Vs. Chronic Renal Failure (CKD)

🩺 Acute Renal Failure (AKI)

Definition: Sudden ↓ kidney function (hours → days)

⏱ Onset

✅ Rapid (hours/days)

🔥 Symptoms
• ↓ urine (oliguria) or sometimes normal urine
• Nausea, vomiting, confusion
• Fluid overload (edema, SOB)

🧪 Labs
• Creatinine rises quickly
• BUN/Cr depends on cause (often ↑ in prerenal)

🧬 Kidney size (Ultrasound)

✅ Normal or enlarged

💉 Common causes

P-R-I
• Pre-renal: dehydration, shock, heart failure
• Renal: ATN, nephritis, drugs (NSAIDs, aminoglycosides)
• Post-renal: obstruction (BPH, stones)

⚡ Complications
• Hyperkalemia (dangerous arrhythmia)
• Metabolic acidosis
• Pulmonary edema

✅ Often reversible if treated early

🧑‍⚕️ Chronic Renal Failure (CKD)

Definition: Gradual kidney damage ≥ 3 months

⏳ Onset

✅ Slow (months/years)

😴 Symptoms
• Fatigue, weakness
• Itching (uremia)
• Poor appetite, weight loss
• Nocturia (early), later ↓ urine

🧪 Labs
• Creatinine elevated for long time
• Persistent proteinuria
• Low Hb (anemia) due to ↓ EPO
• Low Ca + High phosphate → bone disease

🧬 Kidney size (Ultrasound)

✅ Small shrunken kidneys (classic)
⚠️ Exception: diabetic nephropathy, polycystic kidney → may be enlarged

📌 Common causes
• Diabetes mellitus (most common)
• Hypertension
• Chronic glomerulonephritis
• Polycystic kidney disease

🧱 Complications
• Anemia
• Bone disease (renal osteodystrophy)
• Uremic symptoms
• Long-term fluid + electrolyte imbalance

❌ Usually not reversible, progresses slowly

⚠️ 10 THINGS ABOUT ECTOPIC PREGNANCY ⚠️

1️⃣ Definition: Pregnancy where the fertilized egg implants outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube 🚫
2️⃣ Not viable: The pregnancy cannot continue normally and is life-threatening if untreated 💔
3️⃣ Early detection is key: Ultrasound and blood tests help diagnose it early 🩺
4️⃣ Symptoms: Can include sharp abdominal pain, va**nal bleeding, and shoulder pain 😣
5️⃣ Risk factors: Previous ectopic pregnancy, pelvic infections, surgery, or fertility treatments ⚠️
6️⃣ Complications: Can cause tube rupture, internal bleeding, and shock 🩸
7️⃣ Treatment: Medication (like methotrexate) or surgery to remove the ectopic pregnancy 💊✂️
8️⃣ Future pregnancies: Many women can conceive again after proper treatment 🌱
9️⃣ Prevention: No guaranteed prevention, but early care and addressing risk factors help 💡
🔟 Emergency warning: Severe pain, fainting, or heavy bleeding require immediate hospital care 🚨

✅ Hip dysplasia is a condition characterised by an abnormal formation of the hip joint, where the socket (acetabulum) is too shallow, leading to instability or dislocation of the hip. While often diagnosed in infants and children, hip dysplasia can persist into adulthood, potentially causing pain and mobility issues.

✅ At Brisbane Physiotherapy, we strive to provide you with comprehensive insights into hip dysplasia, its symptoms, and how physiotherapy can play a pivotal role in management and rehabilitation.

❄️What Causes Hip Dysplasia?❄️

☑️ Hip dysplasia is believed to arise from a combination of genetic and environmental factors. In infants, risk factors include:

☑️ Family History: A genetic predisposition can increase the likelihood of developing hip dysplasia.
Positioning in the Womb: Breech positioning during pregnancy may contribute to the condition.
Hormonal Factors: Hormones that relax ligaments during pregnancy can lead to joint instability in infants.
As children grow, untreated hip dysplasia can result in misalignment and wear on the hip joint, leading to osteoarthritis in later life.

❄️Symptoms of Hip Dysplasia❄️

✅ The symptoms of hip dysplasia can vary depending on the age of the individual and the severity of the condition. Common signs include:

✅ Infants and Children: Limited range of motion, a noticeable difference in leg length, and a "clicking" sensation in the hip joint during movement may be observed.
Adults: Symptoms may manifest as hip pain, stiffness, a decreased range of motion, and difficulty with activities such as walking, running, or climbing stairs.
Diagnosis

✅ Diagnosis typically involves a thorough physical examination and imaging studies, such as X-rays or MRIs, to assess the hip joint's structure and alignment.

❄️Physiotherapy for Hip Dysplasia❄️

✔️Physiotherapy plays a crucial role in managing hip dysplasia, particularly for those who have not undergone surgery or for post-surgical rehabilitation. At Brisbane

✅ Hemorrhoids, or piles, are swollen veins in the a**s or re**um, caused by pressure from straining, chronic constipation/diarrhea, pregnancy, or prolonged sitting, leading to symptoms like itching, pain, hard lumps, and bright red bleeding.

✅ Treatment often involves lifestyle changes (fiber, water, exercise), sitz baths, and creams, but severe cases might need medical intervention, while prevention focuses on maintaining soft stools and avoiding strain.

❄️Causes & Risk Factors❄️

✔️Straining: Pushing hard during bowel movements or lifting heavy weights.
✔️Bowel Habits: Chronic constipation or diarrhea.
✔️Pregnancy: Increased blood volume and pressure from the fetus.
✔️Lifestyle: Obesity, prolonged sitting on the toilet or at a desk.
✔️Genetics: Family history can increase risk.

❄️Symptoms❄️

✔️Itching or irritation around the a**s.
✔️Pain or soreness, especially when sitting.
✔️Hard, tender lumps near the a**s (external).
✔️Bright red blood on toilet paper or in the toilet.
✔️Protrusion from the a**s (pr*****ed).

❄️Treatment & Prevention❄️

✳️ Dietary Fiber & Fluids: Eat fiber-rich foods (fruits, vegetables) and drink plenty of water to soften stools.

✳️ Avoid Straining: Don't push or sit on the toilet for long periods.

✳️ Sitz Baths: Warm baths (or sitz baths) several times a day to relieve pain.

✳️ Over-the-Counter (OTC): Creams, ointments, or suppositories for itching and pain.

✳️‌Exercise: Regular moderate exercise helps prevent constipation.

Rectova**nal endometriosis: the kind of pain you can’t “push through” 🩺💛🎗️

GENTLE REMINDER: I’m a husband learning behind my wife, who lives with stage IV endo and fibro. This is not medical advice but my own research and a wish to understand. Please share your real-life experiences so I can write more accurately for the next woman. Your lived truth matters more than anything. Tell me what I get right or wrong so I can keep learning and spread better awareness. THANK YOU.

My wife has rectova**nal endometriosis, and I need to say this plainly for the men reading: this is not “bad cramps.” This is not “she’s sensitive.” This is not “maybe stress.”

This is the kind of condition that can make a strong woman look like she’s falling apart, even when she’s doing everything she can to stay calm and keep the peace around her.

Guys, if you love a woman with endometriosis, especially deep endometriosis, rectova**nal endo is one of those words you should learn. Not to scare yourself. But to finally understand why some days she seems okay, and then one bathroom trip, one intimate moment, or one random stab of pain changes her whole face.

Rectova**nal endometriosis usually means endometriosis has grown deeply behind the uterus, near the space between the re**um and the va**na. That area is packed with nerves. It’s also close to organs that move and stretch every day.

So the pain isn’t only hormonal. It can be mechanical, meaning, it can hurt because of pressure, movement, bowel function, inflammation, and nerve irritation. That’s why it can feel like it’s everywhere at once.

A lot of women describe it with words that break my heart because I can hear how hard they tried to explain it before anyone believed them.

They say things like:

• It feels like glass inside me.
• It feels like a knife in my pelvis when I p**p.
• It feels like deep, bruised pain after s*x.
• It feels like my body is stuck and pulling.

Gents… if you’ve never had to fear going to the bath

How to Avoid CS
When you get to your third trimester, reduce the intake of foods that can cause excessive weight gain for the baby. Eat mostly fruits, vegetables, and light foods.

If the baby’s weight is 3 kg or less and you are brave enough, you can be able to push the baby out naturally.

One of the major reasons for CS is the baby’s weight, the baby is often too big to be pushed out. Sleeping position can also contribute, but the most common cause is excessive baby weight.

Some pregnant women are still eating ice cream and drinking yoghurt at 28 weeks. Watch what you eat. When your baby is born, you can eat whatever you want and help the baby gain all the weight then.

❄️Pelvic Floor Exercise❄️

☑️ The first step in performing pelvic floor muscle exercises is to identify the correct muscles.

❄️How can I find my pelvic floor muscles?❄️

➡️ Method 1 – Stopping the flow

✳️ There are several ways which may help you to correctly identify the different parts of your pelvic floor muscles. One way is to try to stop or slow the flow of urine midway through emptying the bladder. Stopping the flow of urine repeatedly on the toilet is not an exercise, but a way of identifying your pelvic floor muscles. This should only be done to identify which muscles are needed for bladder control.

✔️If you can, stop the flow of urine over the toilet for a second or two, then relax and finish emptying without straining. This ‘stop-test’ may help you identify the muscles around the front passage which control the flow of urine. It is not recommended as a regular exercise.

➡️ Method 2 – Visualisation

✳️ Another method to identify your pelvic floor muscles is to imagine stopping the flow of urine and holding in flatus (wind) at the same time. This can be done lying down, sitting or standing with legs about shoulder width apart.

✔️Relax the muscles of your thighs, bottom and abdomen (tummy).

✔️Squeeze in the muscles around the front passage as if trying to stop the flow of urine.

✔️Squeeze in the muscles around the va**na and suck upwards inside the pelvic.

✔️Squeeze in the muscles around the back passage as if trying to stop passing wind.

✔️The muscles around the front and back passages should squeeze up and inside the pelvis.

✔️Women who are familiar with using tampons can imagine squeezing in the va**na as if squeezing a tampon up higher in the va**na.

✔️Identify the muscles that contract when you do all these things together. Then relax and loosen them.
