Usually kidney filters waste products and excess fluid from the body but, keeps useful substances like protein. When this protein begins to appear in the urine, it means the kidney's filters maybe stressed or damage.
Causes maybe..
Urinary tract infection, preeclampsia, chronic kidney disease, diabetic kidney disease etc.
In minor( temporary) cases, it could be dehydration, stress, some type of exercise, pregnancy.
Usually, protein in urine has no symptom but, in severe cases you may see bubbly or foamy urine, swelling in the face, abdomen and extremities due to fluid retention.
You can detect protein in urine by
1. Urine Dipstick test which is usually done first
2. 24 hour urine collection. This measures the exact protein loss too
3. Urine albumin to creatinine ratio ( UACR) common test in diabetes/ hypertension.
4. Bl00rd test to check kidney function can also be done.
How can you manage this?
1. Treat underlying cause. Like controlling BP, or bl00rd sugar, treating infection if that's the cause.
2 Reduce salt intake, stay actively hydrated.
A little amount/ trace of protein could mean nothing serious and may vanish during lifestyle modification. If there's high protein presence, you really need to stick to your doctor's advice.
