*Importance of Microorganisms*
Some microbes are important for human health, while others can make us ill. Microbes are also vital to all life. They play a role in:
- *Normal flora/Microbiota*: Microorganisms inhabit the skin and mucous membranes of healthy normal persons from shortly after birth until death
- *Nutrient recycling*: Microbes decompose organic residues and release nutrients back into the soil.
- *Renewable energy*: Microscopic algae store energy in the form of oil, which can be extracted and converted into fuel.
- *Greenhouse gas emissions*: Microbes in soil and aquatic environments produce greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide.
