Understand what major and minor scales are

Learn how to build them using formulas

Practice with visual keyboard diagrams

Play C Major and A Minor (the simplest scales)

---

Part 1: What is a Scale?

A scale is a sequence of notes played in order—ascending or descending.
There are many types of scales, but we’ll focus on:

Major Scales: Sound happy and bright

Minor Scales: Sound sad or emotional

---

Part 2: The Formula

Major Scale Formula (Whole and Half Steps):

W - W - H - W - W - W - H

W = Whole Step (2 keys apart)

H = Half Step (1 key apart)

Minor Scale Formula (Natural Minor):

W - H - W - W - H - W - W

---

Part 3: C Major Scale (No Sharps or Flats)

C - D - E - F - G - A - B - C

Visual Keyboard Diagram:

C D E F G A B C

Finger Numbers (Right Hand):
1 - 2 - 3 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

Play Tip: Tuck thumb under after 3 to continue smoothly.

---

Part 4: A Minor Scale (Relative Minor of C Major)

A - B - C - D - E - F - G - A

Visual Keyboard Diagram:

A B C D E F G A

[1] [2][3] [4] [5][6] [7][8]

Finger Numbers (Right Hand):
1 - 2 - 3 - 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5

Sound Tip: Notice the more serious or sad sound compared to C Major.

---

Part 5: Practice Challenge

1. Play both scales slowly with the correct fingerings

2. Listen to how the mood changes between major and minor

3. Try saying the formula out loud as you play

---

The Positions and Inversions of Triads

Triad position identifies the factor of the chord that appears as the lowest sounding pitch of the harmony. Any of the three factors of a triad may appear as the lowest sounding pitch. There are three factors of a triad: root, third, and fifth.

Triad inversion is as a result of the fact any of the factors of a triad can be the lowest sounding pitch. An inversion of a triad occurs when the root (the note on which a triad is built) is not the lowest sounding pitch. A triad would have two inversions: first and second. So we have the root position, first inversion, and the second inversion.

No matter what the arrangement of the third and fifth factors is, the triad is in root position if the root of the triad is the lowest sounding pitch. No matter what the arrangement of the root and fifth factors is, the triad is in first inversion if the third of the triad is the lowest sounding pitch. No matter what the arrangement of the root and third factors is, the triad is in second inversion if the fifth of the triad is the lowest sounding pitch.

Over the RAINBOW
How it all started :

In 1988, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole called the recording studio at 3 a.m. and said he had to record a song right away. 15 minutes later, Israel arrived at the studio. The studio owner, Milan Bertosa said, "And in walks the largest human being I have seen in my life." A security guard gave the 500-pound man a large steel chair to sit on. Milan said, "Then I put up some microphones, do a quick sound check, roll tape, and the first thing he does is 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow.' He played and sang, one take, and it was over."
Today, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole's version, is the most requested one of this classic song.
