Jollof rice originated from two tribes in West Africa called the Jollofs and the Wolofs. They are ethnic groups found in Gambia, Senegal and Mauritiana.They were the first people to cook Jollof rice and they called it Benachin. Over the years, other countries in West Africa started cooking Jollof rice but with their own twist added to it. Today, Jollof rice can be prepared in different ways by the various people that savor it but the basic ingredients remain the same. It will interest you to know that Nigeria won the first ever Jollof rice competition in Washington DC. It can be served with fried meat, chicken, fish, vegetables, salad and plantain called dodo in Yoruba language.
