"On Saturday, 16th August 2025, YNAN-UI in collaboration with Brain Wellness Initiative hosted an inspiring webinar on “A Career in Neuroscience”.

The session featured Dr. Temitayo Ayantayo, ECFMG-certified PhD student at the Neuroscience and Mental Health Institute, University of Alberta, Canada, who shared his journey in neuroscience, highlighted the integration of various fields, and emphasized the importance of mentorship and research participation.

Participants engaged in a lively Q&A session, gaining insights on international opportunities and navigating challenges as young Nigerian neuroscientists.

The webinar wrapped up at 5:11 pm, leaving attendees motivated to explore and contribute to the exciting field of neuroscience,"

🧠✨ Understanding the Molecular Basis of Neurodegenerative Diseases

📍 For High School Students |Undergraduate Students |

💥 What Are Neurodegenerative Diseases?

They are diseases where the brain cells (neurons) get damaged and die over time.

🧠 Examples:

Alzheimer’s disease – affects memory 🧓

Parkinson’s disease – affects movement 🤲

ALS (Lou Gehrig’s) – affects muscles 💪

But what happens inside the brain at the molecular level? 🔬

🧪 1. Protein Clumping = Brain Cell Death

Your brain makes proteins to function. But in these diseases, proteins misfold and clump together!

🧩 In Alzheimer’s: ❌ Beta-amyloid clumps outside neurons.

🧬 In Parkinson’s: ❌ Alpha-synuclein clumps inside neurons.

These clumps are toxic — they stop brain cells from communicating and lead to cell death. ☠️

🔥 2. Oxidative Stress = Brain on Fire

Just like iron rusts when exposed to oxygen, your brain can get "rusty" too!

🧪 Free radicals are unstable molecules that damage neurons.

🛑 When the brain can't fight these molecules (because of weak antioxidants), it's called oxidative stress — a major cause of neurodegeneration!

🧠 3. Neuroinflammation = Angry Brain

In some cases, the brain’s immune system stays overactive, attacking its own cells!

🔥 Inflammation causes swelling, heat, and destroys healthy brain tissue over time.

💔 4. Loss of Mitochondria Power

The brain needs a LOT of energy to work.

But in neurodegenerative diseases, the cell’s power plants — mitochondria — stop working well.

🔋 No energy = brain cells can't survive = neuron death.

🧬 5. Genes Can Be Involved Too

Sometimes, changes in our DNA (mutations) increase the risk.

🧠 Example: People with the APOE4 gene have a higher risk of Alzheimer’s.

💡 So What Can Be Done?

Eat brain-boosting foods (rich in antioxidants 🍇🥑🍵)

Exercise — improves brain blood flow 🏃

Sleep well — clears protein waste 💤

Stay mentally active 🧩📚
