Weekly Visit to the Borikiri Remand Home, Port Harcourt
Glory be the God for we have successfully started our visit to the Remand Home, Borikiri, Port Harcourt.
The Remand home holds some of the young teenagers between the ages of 15-25 who had in one point in time made wrong choices in their lives and have found themselves here (the remand home) as a result of the wrong choices they’ve made.
Youthful exuberance manifests between 15 and 25, when teenage boys or girls show signs of livelihood, enthusiasm, vigor, energy and possible rebellion. Life is full of stages; you crawl, learn to stand, walk and run, you go to school, get a job and then start a family.
All stages of one’s life comes with choices and these choices are what shapes our mind and turn out to be who we become in life and in the society.
The wrong choices will not only take us away from God but will also put us in the wrong places, places where we will not be happy with ourselves or the choices we’ve made.
One of the teenagers (name withheld) said “if I had listened to my dad, I wouldn’t have been here”
The ability to do what is right and choose what is right for one’s self isn’t as easy as being said. Why? Because it takes the Grace and mercy of God not to allow circumstances and situations influence our decision especially in our world today where a lot of youths and teenagers are been lured and deceived into wrong choices as a result of:
• Lack of understanding
• Lack of parental guidance
• Environment and association
• Peer pressure and
• Media
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.
Prayer: Lord, I come to you today. I confess that I have sinned against you with the wrong choices I have made. I pray for wisdom and understanding to align myself according to the plans you have for me and also make the right choices in life. Amen.
With God, parental guidance and understanding can and will help these teenagers make the right choice in life, like going to school and also learning a skill.
Those who aren’t privilege to be in school can learn skills like,
• ICT
• Tailoring
• Baking
• Barbing
• Hair Dressing skill
By the provision of God, we have been able to introduce the Foundations’ ICT Acquisition Skill and also a Tailoring Skill as an opportunity for these teenagers to make their choices and learn in other to become better in life.
