*World Diabetes Day 2025*
*Theme*: Diabetes and Well-being
Today, NMA Rivers under the ebullient leadership of *Dr Tamunokuro Diamond* join the global community to mark World Diabetes Day 2025, reflecting on how diabetes affects millions of lives and why promoting overall well-being is essential in prevention and care.
Diabetes now affects over 500 million people worldwide, and the numbers continue to rise.
In sub-Saharan Africa, cases are increasing rapidly, with more than half of people living with diabetes still undiagnosed.
In Nigeria, prevalence continues to grow across all age groups — a serious concern for individuals, families, and the health system.
*Risk Factors*
*Non-modifiable*:
• Age
• Family history and genetics
• Ethnicity
• History of gestational diabetes
*Modifiable*:
• Unhealthy diets
• Physical inactivity
• Overweight / obesity
• Smoking
• High blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol
• Stress and poor sleep habits
*Definition & Classification*
Diabetes is a chronic condition marked by elevated blood glucose due to problems with insulin production or action.
Major types include Type 1, Type 2, Gestational Diabetes, and Other specific forms.
*Prevention & Control*
Promoting well-being is at the heart of diabetes care:
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Stay physically active
• Eat balanced meals
• Avoid to***co
• Get regular screening
• For those diagnosed: monitor glucose, adhere to treatment, and get routine checks for complications
*Recommendations*
Government at the federal and State Level:
1. Strengthen primary healthcare,
2. improve access to medicines and insulin,
3. promote lifestyle education,
4. invest in mental health support,
5. and create environments that encourage healthy living.
*For Families*:
1. Support healthy eating at home,
2. encourage active lifestyles,
3. know your family history,
4. and provide emotional support for members living with diabetes.
*For Individuals*:
1. Know your risk,
2. get screened,
3. make healthy lifestyle choices,
4. and prioritize both physical and emotional well-being.
*This year’s theme reminds us that diabetes care must look beyond blood sugar; it must focus on total wellness: physical, mental, emotional, and social*.
