2025 WORLD AIDS DAY BROADCAST
Today, the 1st of December, the global community once again observes World AIDS Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness about HIV, honouring those we have lost to AIDS-related illnesses, and reaffirming our commitment to supporting people living with HIV. Established in 1988 as the first global health day, World AIDS Day continues to play a vital role in driving advocacy and action against HIV/AIDS.
The theme for this year, “Overcoming Disruptions, Sustaining Nigeria’s HIV Response,” speaks directly to the need for resilience, collaboration, and continuity of services in our national and state HIV response. It reminds us that while great progress has been made, sustaining these gains requires collective effort and unwavering focus.
Rivers State remains one of the states significantly affected by the HIV epidemic. According to the 2018 National AIDS Indicator and Impact Survey, our state ranks third in HIV prevalence nationwide with a prevalence rate of 3.6%. Current Spectrum estimates for 2025 indicate that approximately 234,715 persons are living with HIV in the state. Of this number, over 81% know their HIV status, 55% of them are receiving lifesaving antiretroviral therapy, and 98% of those on treatment have achieved viral suppression. These figures reflect the tremendous work done and the work still required to achieve epidemic control.
The Rivers State Government, under the visionary leadership of His Excellency, Governor Siminalayi Fubara, remains committed to improving access to quality and equitable healthcare. Working through the State AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme, the government has continued to expand HIV services across more than 115 health facilities, covering public, private, primary, secondary, and tertiary care levels.
With the support of our valued partners, we have intensified community HIV testing campaigns and implemented innovative retention strategies to ensure that those diagnosed are promptly linked to care and supported throughout their treatment journey. As part of activities marking the 2025 World AIDS Day, we have launched expanded case-finding efforts in all local government areas to strengthen early detection and ensure timely treatment.
We acknowledge with deep appreciation the critical support from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), United Nation Children's Fund (UNICEF), Society for Family Health (SFH), Elizabeth Glaser Paediatric AIDS Foundation (EGPAF), Paediatric AIDS Treatment Africa (PATA), Network of people living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN), Civil Society on HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (CISHAN), the media, and members of the Health Sector Control Team. Your contributions remain invaluable to our collective progress.
In addition, through the Rivers State Contributory Health Protection Programme (RIVCHPP), more than 1,500 persons living with HIV have been enrolled, further easing their access to affordable healthcare. The Rivers State Emergency Service and Ambulance System has also strengthened emergency response across the state, contributing to improved health outcomes and increased confidence in public healthcare services. Our Health4AllRivers Strategy continues to guide our efforts in building a healthier population, expanding service coverage, and moving decisively toward achieving the 2030 HIV elimination targets.
As we recognize the progress made, we must also acknowledge the challenges that persist. Ending AIDS as a public health threat requires every one of us to play a role. I therefore urge all residents of Rivers State to:
Know your HIV status.
Support people living with HIV.
Encourage pregnant women to register early for antenatal care and access prevention of mother to child transmission of HIV (PMTCT) services.
Challenge stigma, misinformation, and harmful gender norms that hinder progress.
Let us continue to stand together, work together, and sustain our commitment to a healthier, HIV-free Rivers State.
Thank you, and may God bless Rivers State
Dr Adaeze Chidinma Oreh
Honourable Commissioner for Health
