September is Sports Eye Safety Month! Here’s why this matters in Nigeria.
In Nigeria, eye injuries are a significant public health issue. Studies show that at a referral centre in Ekiti State, 616 cases of ocular injury were recorded over ~5 years. In that same study, occupational activities, writing materials, broom sticks, road traffic accidents, and sports/social events were among the causes.
Among children, in a study of primary school pupils in Enugu, almost 8% (7.93%) had suffered ocular injuries. PMC In another study in Enugu, eye trauma accounted for about 15.95% of hospital admissions in a one‑year survey. ResearchGate
What’s worrying is that many of these injuries happen during play or informal sports, often at home or in school settings, rather than in formal, well‑protected environments. Delays in seeking treatment (sometimes more than 24 hours) are common, which reduces chances of full recovery.
But there is very good news: many of those injuries are preventable. Proper protective eyewear, supervision during sports, safe playing environments, and awareness can go a long way.
Let this month be a reminder, whether you’re playing on a field, in school, or just enjoying games, protect your eyes like your well‑being depends on it. Because, honestly, it does.
