Yesterday, I chaired the Opening Ceremony and Induction Ceremony of the 55th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria.
Hosted in our beautiful, vibrant city of Port Harcourt, the theme for this year’s AGSM is, "Advancing Maternal, Infant, and Young Child Nutrition in Nigeria: Innovations and Strategic Partnerships for Sustainable Impact." This is particularly pertinent and critical as Nigeria is facing its worst malnutrition crisis in decades.
As I emphasised in both my opening and closing remarks, as a country, we don't suffer for a lack of nutrition plans or programmes. Rather, real time data and a multi-sectoral, whole-of-society approach are critical to meeting the nutritional needs of women from conception to the postpartum period whereever they are, from the creeks of Bille in Rivers to the hinterlands of Binji in Sokoto. The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Nutrition Society of Nigeria, His Highness Khalifa Muhammad Sanusi II, Emir of Kano also spoke strongly about this, charging all stakeholders, in his remarks. I was also deeply honoured to receive special commendation, especially by His Highness, for my work advancing nutrition in Rivers State in the last two years.
While we are desirous of innovation, an emphasis on continuity will guarantee the relegation of prevalent malnutrition amongst mothers, infants, and young children in Nigeria to the annals of textbooks and history books. This holistic approach to addressing nutrition will be a key determinant towards achieving sustainable improvement in our country’s nutrition outcomes.
Huge congratulations to Prof. Ngozi Nnam on her Lifetime Achievement Award, for decades of immense contributions to advancing nutrition in Africa; and Prof. Henrietta Ene-Obong for a very rousing Keynote Presentation. Both of whom are from my alma mater, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, so I couldn't be more proud.
Congratulations to my dear Sister, Mrs Uju Rochas-Anwukah, SSA to the President on Public Health, and Mrs Ladidi Kuluwa Bako-Aiyegbusi mni, Director and Head of Nutrition, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, for their awards of Honorary Membership of the Nutrition Society of Nigeria.
