Scientists Develop New Battery That Can Be Recharged to 70% in 2 Minutes and Lasts 20 Years

Scientists have developed a new battery that can be recharged up to 70% in 2 minutes and has a lifespan of over 20 years, reports Science Daily.

The battery was developed by scientists from Nanyang Technological University (NTU Singapore) and is expected to impact many industries, especially electric vehicles which suffer from long recharge times of over 4 hours and limited lifespan.

The battery will let electric vehicles charge 20 times faster than currently possible. Also, the battery can endure more than 10,000 charging cycles. That's 20 times more than the 500 cycles typical of today's batteries.

NTU Singapore's scientists replaced the traditional graphite used for the anode (negative pole) in lithium-ion batteries with a new gel material made from titanium dioxide, an abundant, cheap and safe material found in soil. It is commonly used as a food additive or in sunscreen lotions to absorb harmful ultraviolet rays. Naturally found in a spherical shape, NTU Singapore developed a simple method to turn titanium dioxide particles into tiny nanotubes that are a thousand times thinner than the diameter of a human hair. This nanostructure is what helps to speeds up the chemical reactions taking place in the new battery, allowing for superfast charging.

The battery was invented by Associate Professor Chen Xiaodong from the School of Materials Science and Engineering at NTU Singapore.

NTU professor Rachid Yazami, the co-inventor of the lithium-graphite anode that is used in most lithium-ion batteries today, said Chen's invention is the next big leap in battery technology.

"While the cost of lithium-ion batteries has been significantly reduced and its performance improved since Sony commercialised it in 1991, the market is fast expanding towards new applications in electric mobility and energy storage," said Prof Yazami. "There is still room for improvement and one such key area is the power density -- how much power can be stored in a certain amount of space -- which directly relates to the fast charge ability. Ideally, the charge time for batteries in electric vehicles should be less than 15 minutes, which Prof Chen's nanostructured anode has proven to do.

Apple iPhone 6 leaked Mistakenly by China Telecom

The Apple iPhone 6 is hardly the best kept secret in the world with rumors about the upcoming flooding the internet lately. And while we have already accepted the fact that the Cupertino giant’s security measures aren’t what they once were, it’s still interesting to see a high-profile leak such as this one.
China Telecom, one of the Apple’s largest partners, jumped the gun and announced the iPhone 6 through its official Weibo account. The post has since been deleted, but the delay was still enough for it to be copied and shared all over the web.

The post gave us a photo of the Apple iPhone 6 in its three color versions, along with a few bits about its cellular specifications. The smartphone will be available unlocked and will support LTE, 3G, CDMA and GSM networks. China Telecom didn’t sell unlocked iPhones until now, so that’s going to be a first for the carrier.
The Apple event that should see the iPhone 6 make its debut is scheduled for September 9 so there’s not long left until we find out all about the upcoming smartphone.

Tech giant Apple has scheduled a "big" media event related to the iPhone 6 for September 9

The iPhone 6, Apple's ninth iPhone model, is expected to be released in two different sizes - 4.7-inches and 5.5-inches - with the smaller of the two to be made available first.

An iPhone 6 concept by Nikola Cirkovic, which sees the screen extended across the entire width of the device
Both versions are expected to use in-cell touch panel technology - built into the screen and allowing for thinner construction than with standard touch panel films - that was introduced with the iPhone 5.
Like its predecessor, the new model is expected to come in silver, gold and space grey.
The iPhone 6 will be powered by new operating system iOS 8, which Apple unveiled at its worlwide developers conference in June.
Through iOS 8, users will be able to monitor their health and fitness via HealthKit, which aggregates numerous healthcare and fitness apps, such as blood pressure and heart rate monitors through partners including Nike, and allows them to communicate with each other.

ANDROID & WINDOWS PHONE TO ADD KILL SWITCH TO TWART THEFT

Microsoft and Google have signed an agreement with the New York Attorney General to add a "kill switch" to the next versions of Windows Phone and Android.
Eric Schneiderman, the attorney general, released a report Thursday as part of his offices's"Secure Our Smartphones" initiative. That report, which detailed the importance of a kill switch to safeguard smartphones, said that both companies will include the feature in their mobile operating systems.
The kill switch has become a hot topic in the last several months. Many states around the US have argued over whether kill switches should be brought to smartphones. California, for instance, initially shot down the feature, which effectively reduces a smartphone to a brick once it's stolen, but quickly turned around in May to approve the kill switch bill. That bill will require that the feature be turned on whenever a new phone is purchased in the state.
The Secure Our Smartphones report cited Apple as proof that the feature works. Last year, the company built a kill switch feature into its iPhone that would allow owners to remove all data and information in the event their devices were stolen. In New York City alone, according to the attorney general, Apple product robberies fell 19 percent after that change.
The study also took Samsung to task for not including a kill switch in its devices last year. While Apple product robberies were on the decline, Samsung robbers in New York City jumped by 40 percent. Samsung has since introduced a kill switch into its devices, but the report didn't say whether robberies are down.
The report also didn't say exactly when Android and Windows Phone would have kill switches included in their feature sets, but once that's complete, nearly every smartphone available on the market will come with a feature that Schneiderman argues will improve "consumer safety."
CNET has contacted both Google and Microsoft for comment. We will update this story when we have more information.

Nokia to release Android Phone

Leaked photos of a prototype Nokia phone running Android have surfaced online. The phone is codenamed 'Normandy' and press shots for the device were previously posted.

Another picture of the Nokia Normandy, an Android powered Nokia smartphone, has popped up in China on the Weibo network.

The handset is meant to position itself between ASHA and Nokia’s low-end Lumia handsets – not as a straight open smartphone platform, but as a smarter phone with access to a limited collection of apps controlled by Nokia.

Many believe the handset will never see the light, given Microsoft’s impending purchase of Nokia’s handset division, but others believe the handset is already in production and will soon come to market, possibly before Microsoft gains control of Nokia’s phone division.

Forbes contributor Ewan Spence believes Microsoft should embrace the initiative, and continue to sell and support this Android device despite it running a Google OS.

He notes that the phone will still be able to act as a gateway to Microsoft’s cloud services such as Outlook.com, Skype, SkyDrive and Office, and an Android handset may be the best route to the massive volume Microsoft needs to compete against Google and its services.

Android might also better be able to address the lowest end of the market, which would otherwise need to be abandoned to Google.

He notes:
Quote: There is a certain level irony that Microsoft would be using Android to disrupt Android, but business is business. The time to make this move is rapidly approaching. Microsoft can carry on their steady course in the smartphone world, but designing a new ship and sending a second mobile fleet out to raid the low-end market of the Android seas would be a fantastic adventure for 2014."

Do our readers agree with Ewan or would a Microsoft Android handset be an admission of failure? Let us know below.

NOKIA LAUNCHES MIXRADIO MUSIC STREAMING SERVICE

Nokia have launched a free music streaming service which the company claims will learn from a users’ listening preferences to deliver a personalised radio station.

Nokia MixRadio is a rebranding of the service it launched in 2011, and encourages users to give “thumbs up” or “thumbs down” to songs and artists.

It will then offer a range of “hundreds” of mixes without adverts, sign ups or subscriptions, Nokia said.

Playlists can also be saved to listen to offline so users can continue listening when they lose signal, for example on underground travel.

Music producer Nile Rodgers, who is behind Chic and Daft Punk’s hit song Get Lucky, joined Nokia to launch the streaming service in New York, where he announced a number of mixes he has created and shared through the “MixSharing” feature.

The service comes on all Nokia Windows Phones, and users are allowed six skips per hour, or can pay $3.99 a month for unlimited skips.

Jyrki Rosenberg, head of Nokia Entertainment, ambitiously stated it was Nokia’s “mission clear to provide the most simple, personal radio streaming service available.”

Rosenberg went on: “Nokia MixRadio marries simplicity with an incredible level of personalization, for a mobile first approach that will help everybody, not just the avid music fan, enjoy and discover new music for free.

“It’s as easy as turning on the radio, but you’re in control - just one touch of Play Me provides people with their own personal radio station, free of adverts, sign ups and sign-ins.

“You can even skip songs you don’t like, as well as build your station around your likes and dislikes with the unique thumbs up and down feature.”

The personalisation has a “Play Me” button, and works by recognising the number of listens to an artist, skips, as well as recording any tracks or artists that have been made “favourites”.

The app is available in 31 countries, including the UK, U.S. and China. Nokia says the selection of music you are offered will reflect your location.
