RSUTH Hosts SANAS Accreditation Follow‑up Assessment

_Port Harcourt, Nigeria –_ The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) recently welcomed a follow‑up accreditation assessment visit by the South African National Accreditation System (SANAS). The purpose of the visit was to evaluate RSUTH’s Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN) Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) laboratory progress and sustainability since its initial certification with the ISO 15189 - 2022 accreditation in 2024.

Mr. Zubairu Umaru Team Lead of the IHVN Molecular Laboratory made his remark on the follow‑up objective, clarifying that the visit is a routine sustainability check—not a new accreditation—and that RSUTH’s current accreditation remains valid until 2028. He emphasized the strong, collaborative relationship between SANAS and RSUTH management and expressed his desire to see the partnership sustained.

The Rivers State University Chief Medical Director Prof. Chizindu A. Alikor. ably represented by Dr. Simeon C. Amadi, Assistant Chief Medical Director-2 (ACMD 2), welcomed the visitors. Dr. Simeon Amadi detailed the strides made since 2024, confirming that all prior concerns have been addressed and that sustainability plans are now fully integrated into hospital operations. He also acknowledged the support of Governor Siminalaye Fubara and the Rivers State Government in driving RSUTH’s growth.

The SANAS team after the discussions conducted a comprehensive tour of the facilities and thereafter, expressed their satisfaction with the level of compliance with the required standards.

RSUTH’s continued collaboration with SANAS underscores its commitment to delivering high‑quality healthcare services and maintaining accreditation through continuous improvement and effective leadership.

The visit wrapped up with a photo session, symbolizing the successful engagement between the two organizations.

RSUTH CMD Leads Free Cardiovascular Outreach; Earns High Praise from RSU Vice Chancellor

The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) demonstrated its dedication to community health today as the Chief Medical Director (CMD), Prof. Chizindu Alikor, led a highly successful, free Cardiovascular Outreach held at the RSU Medical Center. The initiative, held in anticipation of Prof. Alikor's upcoming inaugural lecture, saw hundreds of residents receiving crucial, specialized heart screenings.

Medical professionals, under the CMD’s direct supervision, provided comprehensive diagnostic services, including Blood Pressure (BP) checks, Electrocardiogram (ECG), free consultation with cardiology specialists, and advanced Echocardiography (ECHO). The goal was to promote preventative care and early detection of heart disease within the local population.

The event was graced by a high-powered delegation from the university led by the RSU Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Zeb-Obipi, and accompanied by the entire body of Principal Officers: Prof Richard Amadi (DVC Academics), Prof Blessing Jaja (DVC Administration), Mrs. Ibimonia Biobele Sotonye Harry (Registrar), Dr. Gift Onyinye Eke (Bursar), and Dr. Juliet Chinedu Alex-Nmecha (Librarian). The delegation toured the outreach stations alongside the CMD.

In an interview, the VC was effusive in his commendation of Prof. Alikor's leadership and vision. "This outreach is an outstanding example of medical professionalism and community engagement," the VC remarked. "It reflects RSUTH's core mission to not just treat ailments but also to proactively improve public health."

The Vice Chancellor also took the opportunity to extend his institution's full support and best wishes to the CMD for his significant academic milestone: his Inaugural Lecture this Wednesday.

In his response, Prof. Alikor expressed gratitude for the Vice Chancellor's continuous support. He reaffirmed RSUTH's commitment to sustaining such programs, emphasizing that bringing specialized care directly to the people remains a top priority for the hospital management.

RSUTH Leads New Partnership with PHC Board to Deliver Free Cleft Surgeries funded by Smile Train

The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital (RSUTH) is spearheading a major new initiative in collaboration with the Rivers State Primary Health Care Management Board.

RSUTH offers 100% Comprehensive Cleft Care services (free surgery inclusive) which is funded by Smile Train which is the world’s largest cleft charity organization.

The cleft awareness program was effective in training PHC workers to identify and promptly refer people with cleft lip and palate to RSUTH to receive free care. In addition, the LGA representatives were mobilized to combat the significant social stigma associated with cleft conditions.

Dr. Oti Nimi Aria, Head of the Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery Team, highlighted RSUTH's commitment to ensuring this vital, free treatment reaches the grassroots. She noted that surgery is optimally performed at about 3 months (lip repair) and at 1 year (palate repair), but advised early referral at birth so newborns and their families benefit from nutritional and psychological support respectively.

This partnership is key to ensuring that every child in need benefits from this life-changing medical care.
