*World Diabetes Day 2025*

*Theme*: Diabetes and Well-being

Today, NMA Rivers under the ebullient leadership of *Dr Tamunokuro Diamond* join the global community to mark World Diabetes Day 2025, reflecting on how diabetes affects millions of lives and why promoting overall well-being is essential in prevention and care.

Diabetes now affects over 500 million people worldwide, and the numbers continue to rise.
In sub-Saharan Africa, cases are increasing rapidly, with more than half of people living with diabetes still undiagnosed.
In Nigeria, prevalence continues to grow across all age groups — a serious concern for individuals, families, and the health system.

*Risk Factors*

*Non-modifiable*:
• Age
• Family history and genetics
• Ethnicity
• History of gestational diabetes

*Modifiable*:
• Unhealthy diets
• Physical inactivity
• Overweight / obesity
• Smoking
• High blood pressure and abnormal cholesterol
• Stress and poor sleep habits

*Definition & Classification*

Diabetes is a chronic condition marked by elevated blood glucose due to problems with insulin production or action.
Major types include Type 1, Type 2, Gestational Diabetes, and Other specific forms.

*Prevention & Control*

Promoting well-being is at the heart of diabetes care:
• Maintain a healthy weight
• Stay physically active
• Eat balanced meals
• Avoid to***co
• Get regular screening
• For those diagnosed: monitor glucose, adhere to treatment, and get routine checks for complications

*Recommendations*

Government at the federal and State Level:
1. Strengthen primary healthcare,
2. improve access to medicines and insulin,
3. promote lifestyle education,
4. invest in mental health support,
5. and create environments that encourage healthy living.

*For Families*:
1. Support healthy eating at home,
2. encourage active lifestyles,
3. know your family history,
4. and provide emotional support for members living with diabetes.

*For Individuals*:
1. Know your risk,
2. get screened,
3. make healthy lifestyle choices,
4. and prioritize both physical and emotional well-being.

*This year’s theme reminds us that diabetes care must look beyond blood sugar; it must focus on total wellness: physical, mental, emotional, and social*.

Theme: Child Survival

The Nigerian Medical Asociation (NMA) Rivers State Branch, under the leadership of *Dr. Diamond Tamunokuro, joins the global community to mark World Pneumonia Day, a day set aside to raise awareness and mobilize action against one of the leading causes of preventable deaths in children worldwide.

World Pharmacists Day 2025

Today, we join the global health community to commemorate World Pharmacists Day 2025, with the theme:
“Think Health, Think Pharmacists.”

This year’s theme highlights the critical role pharmacists play in strengthening health systems, while also addressing workforce shortages and the risks associated with non-professionals filling pharmacy roles.

Pharmacists remain an indispensable part of the healthcare team who ensure safe and rational use of drugs, improving patient outcomes, and contributing immensely to public health.

The Nigerian Medical Association, Rivers State, celebrates all pharmacists for their dedication, professionalism, and partnership in the health sector.

We encourage our members to identify with pharmacists in their places of work today and join in recognizing their invaluable contributions.

World Alzheimer’s Day 2025

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Rivers State Branch, under the leadership of Dr. Diamond Tamunokuro joins the global community to commemorate World Alzheimer’s Day 2025 with the theme:
“Ask about Dementia; Ask about Alzheimer’s.”

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common cause of dementia, leading to progressive memory loss, decline in thinking abilities, and changes in behavior that interfere with daily life. It is burdensome not only to patients but also family members and we doctors and other caregivers.

This year’s theme emphasizes the power of open conversations in breaking stigma, promoting early diagnosis, and ensuring better care for individuals and families affected by dementia. By asking questions, we learn. By learning, we care better. And through care, we give dignity and hope.

NMA Rivers encourages everyone to:

-Ask the right questions about memory loss and cognitive changes.
-Seek early medical evaluation and support.
-Support families and caregivers of those living with dementia.
-Advocate for increased awareness, research, and resources for dementia care.

Together, let us build a compassionate society where no one faces Alzheimer’s disease or dementia in silence.
