DRY EYE PART 2!!!
WHAT CAN PREDISPOSE ONE TO DRY EYE?
1. Computer use.
2 .Contact lens wear
3. Aging
4. Menopause: Dry eye disease most frequently is found in women, especially those that are post-menopausal.
5. Pregnancy
6. Medications such as Birth control pills, Antihistamines, Certain blood pressure drugs.
7. Some health conditions such as: Diabetes, Rheumatoid arthritis etc.
8. Indoor environment such as being frequently exposed to air conditioning, ceiling fans, air heating systems.
9. Outdoor environment such as Dry environment, windy environment, arid climates.
10. Smoking.
11. Frequent flying
12. Eyelid and eye surface problems such as: Incomplete blinking, Eyelid damage due to burn.
13. Vitamin A deficiency.
SYMPTOMS OF DRY EYES.
1. Burning sensation.
2. Feeling as if there is something in your eye.
3. Redness
4. Itching
5. Watery eyes
6. Aching sensations
7. Heaviness and fatigue
8. Sore eyes
9. Sensitivity to light.
10. Blurry vision.
11. Sensation of dryness. Etc.
WHAT CAN YOU DO TO PREVENT DRY EYE SYNDROME?
Make some life time changes such as :
1. Try to avoid smoke, wind and prolonged exposure to air conditioning.
2. Use a humidifier to keep the air in your home from getting too dry.
3. Limit screen time, and take breaks from staring at the computer screen.
4. Wear wrap around sunglasses when you are outside.
5. Drink plenty of water.
6. Properly clean your eye lashes and eyelids.
7. Eat foods containing Omega 3 fatty acids e.g. Walnuts, Soybean oils, Mackerel fish.
8. Eat fruits containing plenty of water such as water melon, cucumber etc.
WHAT CAN YOU DO WHEN YOU EXPERIENCE ALL OR SOME OF THESE SYMPTOMS?
Visit an optometrist near you, they will examine you in order to determine the type of dry eye you have, and differentiate it from any eye allergy and give you the best care.
Do not joke with your eyes!!! Second to God’s most precious gift of life is sight.
