Orientation Programme at Abia State Specialist Hospital Recorded Success

The orientation programme organised by the management of Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Centre, Umuahia, for newly employed staff has been described as successful.

Speaking during the programme, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the hospital, Dr. Chimezie Godswill Okwuonu, welcomed the new employees and congratulated them on their appointments.

Dr. Okwuonu, who delivered a lecture titled “Abia State Specialist Hospital Mandate, Vision, Mission and 2026 Focus,” outlined the hospital’s core responsibilities and future plans.
The CMD explained that the hospital’s primary mandate is the delivery of specialist healthcare services, stressing that it is designed to manage complex medical conditions requiring specialist intervention rather than routine cases such as malaria or typhoid.

He disclosed that the hospital currently has 21 consultants and specialists, comprising 17 in clinical departments and four in laboratory services.
According to him, specialist services available at the facility include cardiology, dermatology, nephrology, urology, and other internal medicine subspecialties. He also highlighted the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU), noting that it remains the only functional ICU in a state-owned hospital in Abia State, with three bed spaces.

Dr. Okwuonu further stated that the Abia State Specialist Hospital serves as a referral centre for general and cottage hospitals across the state. He added that the hospital operates Dental and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) units as part of its service offerings.

On the hospital’s mission and vision, the CMD explained that its mission is to provide specialist support services to general and private hospitals within the state, while its vision is to become a leading specialist hospital by the year 2030, a target he said the institution is steadily working towards.

He announced that the Amachara Annex, a 300-bed facility, is scheduled for commissioning by July. Describing it as a formidable healthcare centre, Dr. Okwuonu said the annex will offer services such as neurosurgery, trauma care, and bone marrow transplantation for sickle cell patients.
Looking ahead to 2026, the CMD revealed plans to establish a highly specialised blood bank capable of managing autoimmune diseases and performing advanced blood component separation. He noted that the necessary equipment for the project has already been captured in the approved budget.

Encouraging the newly employed staff, Dr. Okwuonu urged them to carry out their duties with diligence and professionalism. He emphasised the hospital’s commitment to training and capacity building, disclosing that two nurses are currently undergoing ICU training. He added that the hospital’s most pressing need is the recruitment and development of more specialists, advising staff to pursue specialisation through dedication, self-development, and sacrifice.

As part of the orientation programme, participants were also taken through key administrative and professional standards. The Director of Administration, Sunday Agoha, Esq., delivered a lecture on civil service rules, while Dr. Chukwu Isaac spoke on patients’ rights, with emphasis on autonomy and confidentiality. Sessions on appropriate dressing and proper staff identification were jointly handled by the Head of Nursing Services, Mrs. Chioma Uhegwu, and the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee (CMAC), Dr. (Mrs.) Martha Nwachukwu.

The programme concluded with group photographs and a guided tour of the hospital facilities led by the CMAC.

The newly renovated and retrofitted General Hospital Amachara; Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center and Eye Center Aba Road Umuahia, Abia State. Gov. Alex Otti, OFR, did it!

05/08/2021

AS CHIEF DR JAMIKE OSONDU ENWEREJI MARKS HIS BIRTHDAY TODAY 5TH AUGUST, A REFLECTION OF HIS TWO YEARS ADMINISTRATION AS THE CHIEF MEDICAL DIRECTOR OF THE ABIA SPECIALIST HOSPITAL & DIAGNOSTIC CENTER UMUAHIA.

In the words of Former U S President Thomas Jefferson, “Honesty is the first chapter in the book of wisdom.” Honesty breeds trust. Jack Welch rightly observed, “Trust happens when leaders are transparent.”

On assumption of office two years ago as the Chief Medical Director of Abia State Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center Umuahia, Chief Dr Jamike Osondu (MBBS, FWACS, FMCOG), Aka Na-agwo 1 of Ngwa land, imbibed Honesty and Transparency as his administration’s watchwords as he pursued with vigor the daunting task of salvaging a State institution on the brink of collapse.

Before the arrival of Chief Dr Enwereji, the hospital lacked the organizational structure needed to succeed and carry out the functions of a tertiary health institution in the State. The Hospital was also bedeviled with conscienceless revenue racketeering and questionable transactions by some staff of the Hospital, who were more interested on fattening their wallets than seeing the hospital succeed. It was indeed a terrible situation.

However, Chief Dr Jamike Osondu Enwereji, was not deterred by the terrible situations he met on ground. As a man, who is not afraid of daring the impossible, through his honest and transparent leadership, he has courageously repositioned the hospital for better service delivery to all stakeholders.

He has given the hospital the needed organizational structure for functional and efficient tertiary medicare with departments/units manned by competent hands. In the area of capacity building, clinical meetings which were nonexistence and/or taken for granted have now become a regular exercise taken seriously by the doctors. This is aiding and encouraging knowledge sharing and transfer among the doctors for improved clinical services and preparation of young doctors for post graduate studies.

The digitization of some units/departments and full automation of the revenue system of the hospital helps the management to track financial transactions taking place in the hospital. It also helps the management to monitor the supply and dispensing of drugs and consumables in the hospital for proper accountability.

Don Peppers and Marth Roger opined that “Transparency increases the cost of hiding the truth” The digitization programme has also exposed the management to the monumental rot and Augean stables in the system, which the Chief Dr Jamike Enwereji’s led management is now honestly and transparently tackling holistically.

In conclusion, as Mother Theresa of India right observed, “I can do things you cannot do; you can do things I cannot; together we can do great things. Chief Dr Jamike Enwereji’s honest and transparent leadership approach is winning the hospital the trust of internal and external publics. It has opened up the hospital for business, with many stakeholders proposing to partner with the hospital to implement programmes and projects it lacks the resources to carry out.

With the wonderful plans that the Governor Okezie Victor Ikpeazu’s led State Government has for the Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center, and the growing willingness of the private sector to do business with the hospital, it is only a matter of time, the hospital will live up to the expectations of an enviable secondary healthcare institutions in the State.

All thanks to the Executive Governor of Abia State Dr Okezie Victor Ikpeazu for appointing Chief Dr Jamike Osondu Enwereji, as the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center Umuahia and standing by him to carry out these reforms.
Dr Jamike Enwereji’s two years achievements in Abia Specialist Hospital & and Diagnostic Center is an apt demonstration that one determined person can make significant impact, and few determined persons can change the cause of history.

Happy birthday Chief Dr Jamike Osondu Enwereji, (MBBS, FWACS, FMCOG), Aka na-agwo 1of Ngwaland. God bless Abia State, God bless the entire staff of Abia Specialist Hospital and Diagnostic Center Umuahia.
