ASC started in The Gambia in 2000 with the establishment of Body & Mind – a care home for women with mental health issues following a hospital music therapy outreach by the founder. ASC was registered in the United Kingdom in 2006, United States 2008, Rwanda and Nigeria 2012. Management of people with special needs, especially those with mental health issues is a challenge to many countries in Africa. Many people with mental health issues, when assessed and treated on time, will regain full use of their faculties and become active members of the community. Duty of care behoves on us all to care for those who are unable to help themselves. Due to current economic climate, most people with mental health issues in Africa do not get adequate medical attention. These vulnerable people are left to fend for themselves and often end up in the hands of rapists, ritual killers and other miscreants. They are seen loitering the streets and feeding off dustbins and handouts from people. Females suffer the most, as they are frequently raped and impregnated. When they give birth, the babies are often stolen from them. In Nigeria, ASC is currently offering Floating Support Service (engagement, admission, treatment and resettlement) for people with mental health issues found on the streets of Southern States of Nigeria in partnership with Enugu State University Teaching hospital neuropsychiatric clinic Emene, Enugu State, Nigeria. Due to limited resources, we are focusing on females with mental health issues especially those that are pregnant and/or nursing mothers. The Chairman and Chief Executive of the organisations is trained in the United Kingdom as a Community Mental health worker. He managed various special needs services in London and obtained a Masters degree in Psychological Therapies from Barts and London Medical School, United Kingdom. ASC is a member of Global Health Workforce Alliance, a member of World Federation for Mental Health. In Nigeria ASC is registered with Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and Federal Ministry of Health Abuja. We have a Memorandum of Understanding with Enugu State University of Technology Teaching Hospital and is collaborating with Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development of Abia State, Nigeria. In the Gambia, we still manage Body & Mind – a supported living accommodation for women with mental health challenges. We look forward to working with you to improve health and social care services in Enugu State.
