Iyami, also called Awon Agbalagba, or Iyami Osoronga, or Eleye (owner of the birds), is the Great Feminine Power who has been associated to Witchcraft and female witches (Aje) and male witches (Oso) who bestow all the good and the evil in the earth controlling the equilibrium of things in earth and having power upon the humans: they need to be appeased for them to permit us to change the evil into good, this is why we use to perform the Ipese that is a special feeding for Iyami; when a person is feeding them the Iyami take care of him/her like a mother because they like a kind person. That is why it is important to feed Iyami regularly.

In the Odu Ifa Osa Meji Ifa explains to us what happened between the Iyami and human beings: when humans (eniyan) and birds (eye) came to earth (Aye) from the sky (Orun) they made the sacred promise they will never kill each other. Time passed by and human beings became hungry because there wasn’t food for them and so they started to die one by one; Esu came to humans and put in their minds that why they were dying with so many birds around? Humans decided to break the promise and started to kill the birds and eat them. The Eleye became very furious and went to Eledumare who said that human beings were guilty and since that moment the Eleye or Iyami will have the power to interfere in the human’s life and do what they want with them.

Human beings broke the promise, they broke the equilibrium and now they need Iyami’s favor to avoid negativities.

Sometimes it is advised by Ifa or Orisa divination for a person to gift Iyami with Ipese but it is also good for a person to do it without divination.
