👨‍💼Mpox 101: What You Need to Know from AKSPHCDA

Mpox (formerly known as monkeypox) is a viral infection caused by the monkeypox virus, similar to smallpox but usually milder. It's a zoonotic disease, meaning it can jump from animals to people, and spreads mainly through close contact. 👍

🫴How to Identify It:

Look out for a distinctive rash that can resemble pimples, blisters, or sores – often starting on the face, hands, feet, or ge****ls. It might be confused with chickenpox, measles, or STIs like herpes or syphilis, so testing is key. Visit your PHCs.

Swollen lymph nodes are a common clue that sets it apart from similar illnesses.

🫴Signs and Symptoms:

Symptoms typically appear 1-21 days after exposure and last 2-4 weeks. They include:

♻️Fever and chills

♻️Headache and muscle/back aches

♻️Swollen lymph nodes

♻️Fatigue and low energy

♻️Sore throat

♻️A painful or itchy rash that evolves from flat spots to blisters, then scabs

🫴Prevention Tips:

⏩Get Vaccinated

⏩Avoid close skin-to-skin contact (including hugging, kissing, or s*x) with anyone who has a rash or symptoms.

⏩Don't share items like bedding, towels, or utensils with infected folks.

⏩Wash hands often with soap and water.
If exposed, monitor for symptoms for 21 days and isolate if they appear until fully healed

Stay informed and safe, Akwa Ibomites!

If you notice symptoms, visit the nearest Primary Health Care Center right away.

The Akwa Ibom State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (AKSPHCDA) was privileged to host the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Akwa Ibom State Branch, for a significant meeting with our Executive Secretary, Dr. (Mrs.) Eno Angela Attah.

The AMLSN delegation, led by Apostle Bassey Ekerete (Chairman, AMLSN Akwa Ibom State Branch), included Mr. Enoima N. Bassey (Vice Chairman), Mr. Ekpedeme Umoh (Secretary), and other representatives.

They commended the Akwa Ibom State Government’s bold declaration of a state of emergency in the health sector, recognizing it as a transformative step toward improving healthcare delivery.

During the visit, AMLSN highlighted critical challenges, including limited laboratory capacity, inadequate equipment, and the presence of unauthorized personnel managing laboratories, which undermine service quality and patient safety. They also presented actionable recommendations to strengthen the healthcare system and address these gaps.

In response, Dr. (Mrs.) Eno Angela Attah expressed gratitude for AMLSN’s valuable insights and reaffirmed AKSPHCDA’s commitment to implementing reforms in alignment with the ARISE Agenda of His Excellency, Governor Pastor Umo Eno (PhD), to revitalize the state’s healthcare system.

She urged patience and assured, “We are dedicated to collaborating with AMLSN to address these concerns, enhance laboratory infrastructure, and ensure quality healthcare for all Akwa Ibom residents.”
