Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled cell growth and division. Unlike normal cells, cancerous cells do not follow the body's signals to stop growing, leading to tumors (solid masses) or abnormal blood cell growth (as in leukemia).

Reports show that cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with approximately 18.1 million new cases and 9.6 million cancer related deaths.
Cancer contributes to about 18.4% of all deaths with the leading cancer deaths being Lung cancer (19.4%)

In Nigeria, a study shows that there is increasing cancer rate with an estimated 102,100 new cases and 71,600 cancer-related deaths annually with the most common type being Breast, cervical and prostate cancer

Causes of Cancer
Cancer develops due to genetic mutations that alter normal cell functions. These mutations may be caused by:
✅ Genetic factors (inherited mutations)
✅ Carcinogens (e.g., to***co, radiation, chemicals)
✅ Chronic infections (e.g., H. pylori, HPV, hepatitis B/C)
✅ Lifestyle factors (poor diet, lack of exercise, alcohol)

Types of Cancer
There are over 100 types of cancer, but some common ones include: breast, lungs, prostate, bone and marrow cancers, etc
Symptoms of Cancer
Symptoms vary by type, but common signs include:
⚠️ Unexplained weight loss
⚠️ Fatigue
⚠️ Persistent pain
⚠️ Unusual lumps or swelling
⚠️ Changes in skin or moles
⚠️ Persistent cough or hoarseness

💊 Treatment: Surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy

Prevention & Risk Reduction
✅ Healthy lifestyle (balanced diet, regular exercise)
✅ Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol
✅ Regular screening & early detection (Pap smear, mammograms, colonoscopy)
✅ Vaccination (HPV, Hepatitis B)

Pharmacists play an important role in ensuring safe and effective medication use for cancer treatment, potential side effects and self-care strategies.

*WORLD DIABETES DAY 2024*

A new global survey conducted by the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) reveals that 77% of people living with diabetes have experienced anxiety, depression, or another mental health condition because of their diabetes.

Diabetes care often focuses only on blood sugar, leaving many overwhelmed. Diabetes is not only a physical condition but one that significantly impacts mental and emotional well-being.

Managing diabetes involves ongoing lifestyle changes, dietary adjustments, and sometimes complex treatment plans. These demands can often lead to stress, anxiety, or even depression, making it essential to look beyond blood sugar levels and address the full spectrum of health.

Understanding how diabetes affects mental health and well-being can help us provide better support, both in medical care and emotional resilience, ensuring that patients not only manage their condition but also lead fulfilling lives.

Did you know that small, consistent lifestyle changes can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes by up to 58%? This , let’s take a stand together to raise awareness and commit to healthier habits that support both prevention and better management.

WORLD HEPATITIS DAY, 2024

World Hepatitis Day, observed on 28 July, raises awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and cancer.

This year’s theme is: IT'S TIME FOR ACTION. With a person dying every 30 seconds from a hepatitis-related illness, we must accelerate action on better prevention, diagnosis, and treatment to save lives and improve health outcomes.

There are 5 main strains of the hepatitis virus – A, B, C, D, and E. Together, hepatitis B and C are the most common infections and result in 1.3 million deaths and 2.2 million new infections per year.

Despite better tools for diagnosis and treatment, and decreasing product prices, testing and treatment coverage rates have stalled. But, reaching the WHO elimination goal by 2030 should still be achievable, if swift action is taken now.

Hepatitis prevention can be achieved through – vaccination, avoiding unprotected s*x, using condoms and discarding properly, not sharing sharp objects, practicing good personal hygiene such as proper hand washing with soap and clean water, never using an infected person's personal items, applying all necessary precautions when getting a tattoo or any body piercings, drinking well packaged water especially when travelling, and taking strict precautionary measures when travelling to an endemic area.

Tomorrow, July 29, 2024 at Model Primary Health Centre Ikot Ebido Oku, the Pharmacy Public Health Division UUTH in partnership with Golden Drugs Pharmacy, Uyo will hold free Hepatitis Screening Services from 8am. Come one, come all!

WORLD BRAIN DAY, 2024

WORLD BRAIN DAY is an annual event observed on July 22, aimed at promoting awareness and education for neurological disorders that affect individuals worldwide. World Brain Day 2024 (WBD 2024) is dedicated to Brain Health and Prevention. Based on this theme, we share some health tips for Brain health.

Tips for Brain Health
1) Regular Exercise, especially Cardiovascular exercises
From Research, Physical Activity helps prevent decline in mental function and Alzheimer's disease. These benefits result from increased blood flow to the brain during exercise. It also tends to counter some of the natural reduction in brain connections that occur during aging, reversing some of the problems.

2) Enough Sleep
Sleep is restorative. Sleep plays an important role in the brain health. Some theories state that sleep helps clear abnormal proteins in the brain and consolidates memories, which boosts one's overall memory and brain health. While one is asleep, the brain is not inactive; it’s laying down memories and clearing out amyloids, a waste product left over from metabolic processes that in large amounts has been linked to Alzheimer’s disease.

3) Eat brain-healthy foods
A diet based around fruits, vegetables, whole grains, healthy fats and quality proteins can be beneficial to brain health.

4) Reduce or manage Stress
Stress and its associated hormone cortisol can, over time, cause an inflammatory response that leads to the formation of free radicals that may damage normal brain functions. One should develop tools to get through stressful moments, like breathing exercises, journaling or yoga.

5) Mental Activity
Learning new things can prompt the brain to sprout new neurons. Staying active mentally not only keeps nerve cell connections strong but may create new nerve cells. Practice things like reading, playing cards, puzzles, computer-based games, writing, researching or playing an instrument. Different activities activate different areas of the brain. Doing things one enjoys, even things like completing chores or cooking that activate the brain are good brain-building activities. On the other end of the spectrum, activities like watching TV, unless one is actively engaged, are not going to help strengthen the brain.

6) Socially engaged and positive emotional health
Social interactions, new relationships and stimulating conversations are integral to brain health too. Staying socially active may be good for the brain by reducing stress levels and maintaining healthy connections among brain cells. Maintain an active social life with friends and family and participate in a variety of social activities like sports, dancing, musical events and other cultural activities.

7) Avoid toxins to the brain
Frequent and Excessive alcohol or drug use can damage memory circuits and accelerate the decline in mental aging. Heart disease risk factors such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes and obesity are also associated with a higher prevalence of dementia.

8) Manage Overall health
A poor diet, lack of exercise and smoking can harm the heart, lungs, kidneys and other parts of the body. But did you know the same lifestyle choices that impact the body can also affect the brain.

WORLD SICKLE CELL AWARENESS DAY, 2024

According to research, the gene that causes sickle cell disease evolved in Africa thousands of years ago as a means to fight malaria - the continent's historically leading cause of death. Long before Western medicine was established, sickle cell illness became known by various names in the tribal languages of Africa as it arose over time.

Recognising the need to promote knowledge of this condition, World Sickle Cell Day is a United Nations-recognized day to raise sickle cell awareness nationally and internationally. World Sickle Cell Day is commemorated every year on 19 June, to alert the global public about sickle cell disease.

"Hope Through Progress: Advancing Sickle Cell Care Globally", is the theme this year. It's a call to highlight by coming together, through everyone's amplified voices, by raising awareness, reduce stigma, and drive meaningful change for the millions affected by this disease.

Today is also a day to advocate for Genotype screening by everyone, and Genotypic compatibility. Always ensure to know your Genotype and that of your partner-to-be. It's a proactive way of preventing the future development of the Sickle Cell disease in offspring.
