On World Cancer Day, we celebrate the theme 'United We Are, Unique We Stand'. Today, we recognize the unique strengths and contributions of every individual in the fight against cancer.
CANCER
Cancer is a group of diseases characterized by uncontrolled cell growth and division. Unlike normal cells, cancerous cells do not follow the body's signals to stop growing, leading to tumors (solid masses) or abnormal blood cell growth (as in leukemia).
Reports show that cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with approximately 18.1 million new cases and 9.6 million cancer related deaths.
Cancer contributes to about 18.4% of all deaths with the leading cancer deaths being Lung cancer (19.4%)
In Nigeria, a study shows that there is increasing cancer rate with an estimated 102,100 new cases and 71,600 cancer-related deaths annually with the most common type being Breast, cervical and prostate cancer
Causes of Cancer
Cancer develops due to genetic mutations that alter normal cell functions. These mutations may be caused by:
✅ Genetic factors (inherited mutations)
✅ Carcinogens (e.g., to***co, radiation, chemicals)
✅ Chronic infections (e.g., H. pylori, HPV, hepatitis B/C)
✅ Lifestyle factors (poor diet, lack of exercise, alcohol)
Types of Cancer
There are over 100 types of cancer, but some common ones include: breast, lungs, prostate, bone and marrow cancers, etc
Symptoms of Cancer
Symptoms vary by type, but common signs include:
⚠️ Unexplained weight loss
⚠️ Fatigue
⚠️ Persistent pain
⚠️ Unusual lumps or swelling
⚠️ Changes in skin or moles
⚠️ Persistent cough or hoarseness

Prevention & Risk Reduction
✅ Healthy lifestyle (balanced diet, regular exercise)
✅ Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol
