Today is WORLD AIDS DAY and now more than ever, there is a burden on us to educate and encourage more HIV testing among young people.

Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is an infection that attacks the body’s immune system. Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is the most advanced stage of the disease

HIV is spread from the body fluids of an infected person, including blood, breast milk, semen and vaginal fluids. It is not spread by kisses, hugs or sharing food. It can also spread from a mother to her baby.

Support for those living with HIV/AIDS is essential for a healthy society and that is why we take a pledge to stop the stigma

Today is World Sickle Cell Day

Today we lend our voice in creating awareness about the lifelong disease, advocacy for better health systems and prevention of Sickle Cell Disease.

Sickle Cell Disease occurs when the red blood cells become sickle and die off faster than the body can make them. This leads to constant blood shortage of blood. Also when they travel through small blood vessels, they get stuck and block the flow causing pain..

Creating and empowering Sickle Cell communities is crucial to improving the lives of those living with sickle cell. There are also certain roles we can play
- Newborn testing to tackle issues early
- Knowing your genotype
- Preventing Sickle Cell births

Sickle Cell is not a death sentence, when managed with enough information and care. Support for sickle cell warriors is needed and necessary.

World Asthma Day 2023

World Asthma Day is a global initiative to improve asthma awareness and care around the world.

Asthma may be common but it is a serious and sometimes fatal illness.
Attacks happen when the airways become inflamed and narrowed, making it hard to breathe.

Asthma attacks can be serious and can also be fatal. During a severe asthma attack you may not get enough oxygen into your lungs and can even stop breathing.

Asthma cannot be cured, but can be managed with measures can help you avoid a severe asthma attack like

- Sticking to your asthma action plan created by your doctor, be it medication,inhalers or nebulizers

- Avoiding your known triggers - smoke, strong perfumes, dust, strenous exercise

- Monitoring your condition by regular doctor visits, preventing of related illnesses with vaccination and health living.

As we educate you on this serious condition, we encourage that you get a health screening if you are experiencing the symptoms of a breathing difficulty. We also encourage people to learn about the condition so as to lend help to those in need.

World Liver Day is focused on making everyone adopt a healthy lifestyle and spreading more awareness about liver diseases.

This year the focus is FATTY LIVER DISEASE.

Why do liver disorders occur?

Liver disorders often occur because of bad lifestyle choices, excessive consumption of alcohol and unhealthy food over a long period, inactive lifestyle and lack of exercise.

Fatty liver disease can cause Fluid buildup in the abdomen, liver cancer and end stage liver failure. It is linked to

-Being overweight or obesity
-Insulin resistance, in which your cells don't take up sugar in response to the hormone insulin
-High blood sugar (hyperglycemia), indicating prediabetes or type 2 diabetes)
-High levels of fats, particularly triglycerides, in the blood

Chances are that you can reduce your risk by

- Choosing a healthy diet.
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Exercise

Hearing care begins as soon as birth! The Newborn Hearing Screening Test helps identify babies who have permanent hearing loss as early as possible. This means parents can get the support and advice they need right from the start. 1 to 2 babies in every 1,000 are born with permanent hearing loss in 1 or both ears. This increases to about 1 in every 100 babies who have spent more than 48 hours in intensive care.Most of these babies are born into families with no history of permanent hearing loss. How is the newborn hearing test done? The newborn hearing test is called the Automated Otoacoustic Emission (AOAE) Test. It takes just a few minutes. A small soft-tipped earpiece is placed in your baby's ear and gentle clicking sounds are played. Request a hearing test if your baby is - Born with Jaundice - Has a low birth weight - After a difficult labor - Spends time in intensive care due to complications As your child grows, be sure to avoid exposure to loud noise, ear cleaning, dirt and harmful objects in and around the ear to repeal hearing loss.
