VAGINAL BLEEDING AFTER S*X
OVERVIEW:

Vaginal bleeding after s*x is common. Although it's often called "va**nal" bleeding, most benign bleeding in younger women comes from the cervix. However other parts of your ge***al and urinary systems can be involved.

Possible causes of va**nal bleeding after s*x include:

Cervical cancer
Cervical ectropion, a condition in which the inner lining of the cervix protrudes through the cervical opening and grows on the va**nal part of the cervix
Cervical polyps — noncancerous (benign) growths on your cervix
Cervicitis (an inflammation of the cervix)
Endometrial cancer (uterine cancer)
Friction during s*xual in*******se
Ge***al sores that result from s*xually transmitted infections, such as ge***al herpes or syphilis
Inadequate lubrication or foreplay
Injury to the uterine lining (endometrium) during in*******se, especially in women taking oral contraceptives
Menstruation
Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) — infection of the female reproductive organs
Trauma from s*xual abuse
Vaginal atrophy (genitourinary syndrome of menopause — GSM)
Vaginal cancer
Vaginal dryness
Vaginitis (bacterial vaginosis)
Causes shown here are commonly associated with this symptom. Work with your doctor or other health care professional for an accurate diagnosis.

When to see a doctor
If you're premenopausal and have infrequent episodes of va**nal bleeding after s*x and you've had normal results on routine Pap tests and s*xually transmitted infection screenings you don't need to see your doctor. For va**nal bleeding that worries you, make an appointment with your doctor. If you're at risk of or feel you have been exposed to a s*xually transmitted infection, see your doctor for an evaluation.

If you're postmenopausal, va**nal bleeding at any time must be evaluated. See your doctor to be sure that the cause of your va**nal bleeding isn't something serious.

You'll need prescription medication to treat trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis and va**nal atrophy. If you know you have a yeast infection, you can take these steps:

Use an over-the-counter medication specifically for yeast infections. Options include one-day, three-day or seven-day courses of cream or va**nal suppositories. The active ingredient varies, depending on the product: clotrimazole (Gyne-Lotrimin), miconazole (Monistat 1) or tioconazole (Vagistat-1).
Some products also come with an external cream to apply to the l***a and opening of the va**na. Follow package directions and complete the entire course of treatment, even if you're feeling better right away.
Apply a cold compress, such as a washcloth, to the l***al area to ease discomfort until the antifungal medication takes full effect.
