From time to time I dedicate some moments to clearing house...which means getting rid of attachments...things that are around me that I will not carry forward beyond this lifetime...sometimes I come across very interesting tid bits...as happened yesterday. I found a meditation practice called the Tonglen Practice...giving and receiving...I posted this years ago but coming upon it yesterday i thought " I will post this again as it seems very relevant to what we are living in our planetary evolution so perhaps some people will find it helpful." I learned the practice 40 or 50 years ago...I had just returned from Thailand where I had been interned in a Buddhist monastery for a short time. The experience changed me profoundly and I wanted to follow up when I returned to Canada...so I asked around...and as often happens when i ask around I find what I need..and I began studying at Karma Choling, a Buddhist monastery in Barnet, Vermont. The teacher there was Chogyam Rimpoche who was known as a "crazy wisdom teacher" because of his rather unorthodox lifestyle and manner of being...I am very grateful to him for sharing this meditation and much more. I have a adapted the practice a little to my own needs and perhaps you will do the same but essentially what I am sharing here is what I was taught at that time....I think of this practice as "post therapy"...Why do I say that? Well, traditional therapy is essentially about the "Me Story" as I call it...and each of us has a story...a story of trauma...of dis ease and a general questioning about who we are and what we should be doing in this lifetime...Therapy teaches us to strengthen our basic sense of ego....to feel grounded and confident in life...It should come to an end at some point..maybe three years...that dependency ends and we are more or less alone again. except that we have a complete ego to accompany us..What will we do with this ego?...For those who understand what's going on and want to move on the real work begins...Perhaps the same questions ...who am I. and why am I here?...but without the emotional baggage we carried into our therapy...so now we can get on with the difficult task of being of service to the rest of the world while at the same time making a living and developing a relationship with the True Self which is to be found in the lotus of the heart...Having said all that the meditation is as follows...You might do it in the traditional sitting position or perhaps it would be nice to do it while walking outdoors in the forest or by a river or the ocean..You will know where is best for you...Now comes the shocker...The object of this meditation is to break down our territoriality...my space...my things...my beliefs...my God and so on...breathe out all that we hold precious and breathe in all that is negative...Maybe you should read that again because it is exactly the opposite to what you learned in therapy about setting boundaries and establishing good defenses...and I am not suggesting you drop all those things.... we need defenses in this world...but in this meditation we have made a big jump...from our rational mind to our superconscious or intuitional mind...so we might have some resistance to this approach..but if you are still with me don't sweat the small stuff. about trying to understand what we are doing.. just do your best..Now get into the flow of your breathing...perhaps deepen it a little...after a moment or two imagine that you are actually drawing breath right down through the crown of your head...This is where your soul resides so now you are. charging your energy battery using energy that is available to you for your whole lifetime. Let it pass right through your body and out of your feet into the arms of Mother Earth. Allow some of this in breath to rest in your heart...let your heart expand a little by giving thanks for who you are and where you have come to on your Earth Walk...Feel the warmth and love of your own existence...Once you have done this focus on someone who you feel has sacrificed themselves on your behalf or who has given you a lot. Begin to send them the very best of who you are. Don't hold anything back...allow that feeling to flow from your heart and down you arms and hands out to them. The idea is to be truly generous and open...get beyond your nice thoughts and words and good intentions and make this a true offering of love. ..If you connect with this practice you will experience some changes in yourself...the main one being that you will not feel empty or fearful from giving so much of your goodness to someone else...You will feel energized...as if you would like to go on giving for a long long time. You will be touching into an unlimited resevoir of love and generosity and the more you send the fuller you will feel. Remember don't wish for anything...just do the practice...What you have done so far is complete in itself and you can stop here...or you can follow on. If you are still with me we are going to focus on people with whom we are not in harmony...where anger, passion and indifference separate us from loving. We live in a time of war and disagreement..of judgement and selfishness and we can actually think of tribes and nations here...take it beyond the individual level if you like. Now we are going to do something completely contrary to our natural instincts..Instead of pushing the negative thoughts and feelings away we are going to draw them in. We are going to draw in all the hatred and rejection...resentment and so on..into ourselves. Remember that you have just created an unlimited space of joy and generosity inside yourself...and you have an opportunity to see if it was just an interesting little something or other or if it really means something. Focus on the person or group who evokes these negative feelings...now begin to inhale these negative feelings..."they are so horrible...so greedy...so destructive. ..and so on"...ask them to give you their hatred...their racism...their arrogance...their stupidity...the list can be a long one...because of course the list is a list of your own projections...Remember to focus on your breath and keep a steady rhythm as you do this...Again, don't wish for anything. Just do the practice...Surprisingly, you will find that rather than being upset you will experience relief...a kind of expansion in the body...Instead of closing up and shutting down you may feel more alive and open...Keep the tap open as long as you like and then bring your hands together in front of your heart in the Prayer Position and stabilize your breathing...You might want to close with a small prayer or a sacred sound..." With our ears may we hear what is good. With our eyes may we see righteousness.Tranquil in body may we who worship truth find rest...Aum" The Upanishads

...just to put that last post in another way...whatever mess you have created for yourself...It is yours...not anyone else's...and it's the perfect mess for you...to evolve and become a better and happier person...so if you find yourself in a bit of a mess today...smile...then laugh at yourself... and enjoy the ride.

Have you noticed how you are evolving through stages of awareness about what is most important in your life and in your values with respect to how you want to live this incredible gift called human life? Our awarenesses become finer and finer as the desires of the lower self are dissolved into the Higher Self and eventually into the Universal Self. This process is like learning any skill...If you want to be a good singer for example, you have to learn the basics of breath and sounding and voice placement in the body etc. If you don't learn these skills then your voice will never fully reflect all of who you are....and so it goes for any process of mastery. It is important to learn the basics well. But when we become more skilled at whatever it is that we have chosen as a form to express ourselves we may look back and think how little we knew back there in grade one. That's true but don't knock anything about your past. The truth is that every stage of learning and growth is built on what went before...If the past seemed difficult then you can be sure that those difficulties were exactly what you needed in order for our foundation of personhood to be strong enough to stand up against the next storm. Each of us is in the perfect place and time...never doubt it.

The more we can control or withdraw from external conditions of time and space with the specific intention of learning who we truly are, the freer we will be in all aspects of our lives.

27/01/2024

That famous question ..Who am I?...have you found an answer yet? If you haven't, one thing is for sure...you will never find it in anything external...none of our senses can tell us the truth...they will only lead us astray...maybe to enjoyable places, people and things...but inevitably they will fail us with regard to this most important question and its answer...We must look inside...dig deep...the true Self is to be found "in the lotus of the heart."...Take a break...each day...take a complete break from what draws you away from your true Self...sit...and listen to your own inner silent Self...She will never lead you astray.

Even if we do just a little bit in terms of our daily spiritual practice it will be worth much more to us in our life than the many things we do daily without any joy in the mind. The point is to do the practice because we want to...genuinely and with true joy...Gradually this state of mind will spread through our whole life ...and after all that is the point of this exercise of living...to be truly joyful and happy...is it not?

Recommended practice: Try to get an hour a day where you are COMPLETELY alone...out of your safety zone...preferably somewhere in nature...no phones...no dogs...no people...no coffee...nothing but you and your Self...If you do it regularly for awhile you will find that your mind begins to relax into the "real" as opposed to the "unreal" in which we find ourselves immersed more or less all the time... this kind of aloneness can be healing and restorative...and really fun.

In the Yogalife we have an opportunity to experience a wider perspective of who we are. This is not completely new to any of us because it has always been inside us....and we actually know that... It unfolds according to time and place just as a seed unfolds the plant that always lay dormant within it. Each of us will become a Being of Love and Light in our own time, because we have always been a realized Being.."God in us" as it were...If we understood this point I think we would be much more compassionate and understanding of others...as we would realize that we are each on the same path...just at different points of development...and we can move along much more quickly as a society if we help each other rather than being hurtful in our thoughts and actions...

...something to reflect on today: Our senses cannot perceive the soul...Only a soul can perceive another soul. It is only through this medium that we can experience true friendship or love. Otherwise what we call love or friendship ...or anything really...will be limited to our sensory perception of it and our conditioned response to it...and as a consequence we will always feel incomplete (like I want more) and frustrated (this doesn't quite do it for me), even at the time of our death. Nothing in this world , individual or collective...can have a completely successful and satisfying resolution without this "soulful" understanding...something worth developing my dear friends...

...Question for those of you who made New Year's resolutions...How are you doing today Jan 3, 2024?...Have you stayed the course...made and activated a plan? I have found that many people who are very enthusiastic on Dec 31 with their New Year resolutions never make it out of the starting gate. Maybe they stayed up late celebrating on the 31...got up late on Jan 1...a little tired...a little disoriented perhaps...hopefully a little happy...spent Jan 1 cleaning up and reliving the 31...forgot about the new resolutions...one day lost. Unfortunately this is often the case with New Year's stuff. I am not a New Year's resolution person but I have had some life changing moments...some of them intentional...many seemingly random happenstances... some that seemed to emerge from the deep waters of my subconscious and completely spontaneously shifted the focus of my life..some of them very simple everyday occurrences. One of these happened to me when I was living in Costa Rica. I was passing through an unwanted divorce and the pains of attachment sometimes put my mind in depress mode....On the morning in question I woke up in a funk...nothing was happy in my small kingdom...What to do?..Without any real plan I set out for the local Mall...people...activity...and so on...I was heading for a bookstore...a place to escape and maybe wake up in some other world...When I arrived I found that the store was closed...which added to my funk...world against me and all that sort of thinking. I resigned myself to the wait..sat down on a public bench and looked around...It wasn't long before my eyes settled on a poster in the bookstore window...Albert Einstein's picture...but it wasn't the picture that woke me up...it was the quote that surrounded it..."I want to know God's thoughts...the rest are details."...I immediately started laughing...My funk was gone in a moment...I knew that I had found a challenge...something that was worthy of who I really was...I entered the store and bought the picture...Until this day, maybe 30 years later, it is just above my desk for all who visit me to see...The day I bought that poster of Albert my direction in life changed...Details... even the relatively important ones... became significantly less important and the Quest for Inner Joy...Light ...and Love... became paramount. I feel as if I have crossed a wide flat open plain...a desert perhaps...the Biblical story of the children of Israel (the children who refused to open their hearts) spending forty years in the wilderness comes to mind...The Path has often been unclear and I have often fallen and hurt myself...and perhaps others too..But I have made the crossing successfully and I have arrived at a small door at the bottom of a mountain. I know it is the right door and the right mountain...and I am knocking...every moment of every day I am knocking on this door...and I will keep knocking every day until I leave this body...unless it is opened sooner...If you have crossed this desert then you know what I am talking about...If you haven't I wish you a very happy journey...maybe you will make it in 2024...if not, maybe later...but you will make it...which brings me back to those year's resolutions...think big...and never give up no matter how many times you fall down and think that you have failed...Failure...like my funk...is a state of mind...and you can change it.
