Today marks the 🎂anniversary of Martin Allgöwer’s birth🎂.

Allgöwer played a pivotal role in establishing the AO on a firm footing by conducting scientific research. He was among the founding members of the AO in 1958 and served as the head of the Laboratory of Experimental Surgery in Davos from 1959 to 1963. Allgöwer was President of the AO from 1979 to 1982 and President of AO International from 1984 to 1988. He was also the first President of the AO Foundation from 1984 to 1992.

He had a keen scientific interest that extended beyond the musculoskeletal system. After completing his postgraduate work in tissue culture research in Basel and working in the burn unit at the Texas Medical Center in Galveston, he wrote his dissertation on "The Cellular Basis of Wound Repair." His study of the role of human monocytes can be viewed as a precursor to later stem cell studies.
