Our yoga practice and self-compassion must go hand in hand.

As we begin our journey with yoga and start cultivating greater awareness, we also need the practice of self-compassion.

Mindfulness brings us into the present moment, revealing our thoughts and feelings. Along with clarity and understanding, it can also uncover the discomfort that comes with deeper awareness. We begin to see our habits, our beliefs, our patterns. We notice the areas of our mind and our life that aren’t always easy to look at or hold space for.

But if we want to move forward within our yoga practice—if we want to allow the practice to deepen, to move beyond simply knowing ourselves and toward knowing the Self—self-compassion becomes non-negotiable.

Most of the time, we’re wired to focus on what’s wrong. When we come face to face with discomfort or difficulty, our instinct is often to push it away or hide.
Yet for real change to happen, we must meet ourselves exactly where we are. This includes the parts that feel easy to befriend and the parts we instinctively want to run from. Instead of turning away, we learn to hold it all with care and kindness. In doing so, we ease the tension in the heart and create space to welcome the present moment as it unfolds—whether it’s pleasant or not.

What might it look like to meet yourself with more self-compassion?

You may have heard that alignment isn’t strict—that it simply provides structure for freedom.

But many of those so-called “non-strict” cues are still rigid, and they don’t protect every body that shows up to a yoga class. Trying to make everyone move or look the same doesn’t create safety—and for some bodies, it can actually do the opposite.

Your body is unique. Your bones, your joints, your proportions—all of it affects how a pose feels and looks for you. Expecting your body to match someone else’s alignment is a risky assumption.

The pose should adapt to you—not the other way around.

You won’t look the same as everyone else in yoga. Some bodies will never be best friends with lotus pose. Some hands will never reach the floor in triangle—and that’s not a problem.

Your feet don’t need to be parallel. You’re not inflexible because you can’t step forward gracefully into a lunge or touch your toes.

When you prioritise how a pose feels over how it looks, you come back to what yoga is actually about. No one knows your body better than you—and your practice is allowed to look different.

Yoga was never about picture-perfect poses or being the bendiest.
It’s about self-realisation.

If you’ve never fit the yoga mould but still want to practice, you’re welcome here.

Have you ever been in a yoga class and heard this cue?

“Keep your knee stacked over top of your ankle… or else you know, it might explode.”

Okay, all jokes and drama aside, your knee will not explode if your knee doesn’t stay behind or directly stacked over your ankle. And the teacher probably never said it’ll explode 🤭

But is it really so wrong if the knee travels forward?
No, it’s not. Your knee actually travels forward a lot, like when walking up stairs or getting up from a chair. Next time pay attention and you’ll see for yourself.

This cue has safety roots, and for some people with certain conditions or injuries, keeping the knee over the ankle can feel supportive. But for most people, letting the knee move forward is a normal, functional movement and nothing to worry about.

Those with knee pain, past injuries, or significant weakness may need to pay attention, but even then the real factors are depth, compression, and load—not whether the knee travels past the ankle.

At the end of the day, you’re the one in your body, and you know it best. If letting your knees travel forward causes pain, keep them over the ankles. But if there’s no pain, don’t stress about it—even if your teacher keeps chanting the cue like a mantra in your direction. Your knees are probably fine; they’ve survived stairs, chairs, and life so far.

What’s the next yoga cue you want to see if it’s actually necessary? Ask us!

Our yoga shala is nestled deep within the jungle — a truly special place surrounded by nature and wildlife on all sides.

It’s no doubt that being in nature has a profoundly positive impact on our overall wellbeing. Spending time in nature helps to lower our stress, lift our mood and bring a sense of calm, joy and connection.

Nature is not only beneficial to our overall well-being, but it’s also supportive to our yoga practice. It helps to ease a busy or stressed mind, reducing the external distractions we encounter throughout the day, and creating space to turn inward and reconnect with ourselves.

This place is for all to share — a place to practice, to pause, and to be part of it too.

Have you ever wondered what it actually means to deepen your yoga practice?

Often, the first thing that comes to mind is taking the body further — folding in half, touching your toes, or maybe even putting your foot behind your head. For many, “deepening” means nailing a picture-perfect pose.

But deepening your practice isn’t the same as getting a deeper stretch or pushing the limits of your body. One of the biggest issues with that perspective is that we’re not all built the same. Each of us has a unique skeletal structure and bone shape that determine how a posture looks and feels in our bodies.

Take baddha konasana (also known as butterfly pose) for example. How close your knees come to the ground depends largely on the shape of your hip sockets and femur heads. Someone with shallow hip sockets and longer femurs will likely have more range of motion, while someone with deeper hip sockets and shorter femurs will have less. No amount of stretching or repeating the pose will change your bone structure or make your knees move closer to the ground.
That’s one of many reasons why “going deeper” in a pose doesn’t necessarily mean you’re deepening your practice. If that were true, people with a skeletal advantage would automatically have a more advanced practice — which isn’t the case. Physical ability isn’t an indicator of depth. Yoga — and a deeper practice — can’t be seen or measured by alignment or grace; it’s something felt and experienced by the practitioner.

Perhaps deepening your yoga practice looks like finding more balance through life’s highs and lows, choosing a different response that breaks an old habit, or embracing change — even when it’s uncomfortable. When we reduce advancing in yoga to going further in a pose, we miss opportunities to expand other areas of our life and practice beyond the mat.
Don’t get caught up with how far you can or cannot go — it’s not about going further into a pose but instead about going further into yourself.

How would your experience of yoga change if “deeper” no longer referred to the depth of a stretch?

If yoga isn’t a workout, then why does every class seem like… well, exactly that?

Before even stepping through the door of a yoga studio, most people already know that the hot yoga place around the corner will make them sweat and become more flexible. Maybe you’ve heard people say it at the office, seen it on Instagram, or read it in a class description promising to “boost your fitness, improve flexibility, and enhance mental clarity.” Or maybe you’ve come across a YouTube video titled “20-Minute Yoga Workout.”

There’s rarely any mention of the mind—and when there is, it’s usually framed as a way to improve focus or increase productivity rather than as an introspective practice.
And while there’s nothing wrong with wanting to get fitter, more flexible, or more focused, that was never the original purpose of yoga. The way most classes are positioned and taught today isn’t really offering yoga to students, but rather a watered-down version that’s lost touch with its original intent. Students seeking yoga are often met instead with a workout, not self-inquiry.
Meanwhile, those who might truly benefit from what yoga offers often miss the point entirely—because the real essence of the practice is reduced to a quote or two sprinkled in at the end of class.

But yoga can be returned to its original purpose. Shifting your view from seeing yoga as simply a workout can open the door to what it was always meant to be: a way to navigate life—the day-to-day highs and lows—with more peace, calm, and clarity.
It’s important to have a space where you can explore more than just movement—to explore self-inquiry, awareness, and the deeper intention yoga has carried all along.

At Cala Azul Yoga Collective, we offer just that. Join any of our drop-in classes or book a private session to experience how yoga can become a practice again—rather than just a workout.

Have you ever wondered if there’s really a difference between yoga studios?

At first glance, they might all seem the same—poses, mats, and the promise of peace. But not every yoga space is created equal. And we’re not saying one yoga studio is better than another—each has its own unique approach.

Some studios focus on physical alignment and precision, making you feel like you need to be super flexible to join. Others move quickly with fast-paced, high-energy flows that might leave you struggling to keep up. Some may focus mostly on the physical practice of yoga, but you’ve been seeking something deeper. Or maybe you’ve tried other studios and didn’t feel like you belonged—or thought yoga was only for a certain type of person.

But it doesn’t have to be like this.

It is possible to find a studio where you feel comfortable just as you are.
Where being flexible isn’t a prerequisite, and everything is made adaptable to your needs.Where you can move at a pace that feels right for you—whether that’s faster or slower.
Where the focus isn’t just on the physical practice, but on connecting to the deeper roots of yoga.

Cala Azul Yoga Collective is on a mission to create a space where anyone—whether you’re just starting out or have been practicing for years—can show up exactly as they are.
Here, you can practice yoga without worrying about fitting in, being flexible enough, keeping up with the class, or feeling out of place. We’re here to support you on your journey—wherever that may be.

We’re focused on being accessible, inclusive, and offering more than just physical postures. We aim to teach the full depth of yoga—the philosophy and principles that guide the practice—so you can integrate its wisdom into every aspect of your life.

Are you ready to experience yoga in a way that truly fits you? Come try a class and feel the difference.

Meet Erika, our grounding guide and newest teacher at Cala Azul Yoga Collective.

Erika’s yoga journey began in search of something to ground her—something that would help her find balance in a demanding, high-stress life. She had no idea over 10 years ago that it would lead her to become more connected to herself and discover not only strength but also a deep sense of peace and clarity in her mind, body, and soul.

At first, yoga felt intimidating as she struggled with the idea that it was only for certain body types, skill levels, or those well-versed in yogic philosophy. As her practice deepened, she realized that yoga was about meeting herself where she was, embracing her imperfections, and discovering inner stillness through breath and movement. This shift in perspective completely changed her approach as a student and later became the foundation of her teaching.

As a teacher, Erika’s goal is to make yoga accessible to everyone—without the pressure to fit into a specific mold. She strives to create a space where students feel empowered to explore their practice with curiosity and compassion, offering modifications and variations so everyone can participate in a way that feels both supportive and empowering.

Whether someone is new to yoga or a seasoned practitioner, Erika is here to help them connect to their body, cultivate mindfulness, and build confidence in a way that supports their unique journey. She invites students to join her on the mat to explore the transformative power of yoga✨💙

Have you ever really wondered what yoga is actually all about?

You’ve likely heard about “yoga,” whether from photos in magazines, social media, or a friend telling you that they attend weekly yoga classes. Based on what you’ve seen, you might think yoga is simply a stretching class designed to make you more flexible, with some fancy breathing added in—and that you’re supposed to leave feeling less stressed and refreshed.

Maybe you’ve thought about attending a class but decided against it, feeling that it isn’t accessible to you or your body as you don’t fit the image of the flexible, young person seen in social media. Or perhaps you don’t understand the hype? After all, it just seems like another kind of workout or stretching program—and they all advertise that they’re good for you and your health. So, what makes yoga more special than Pilates or a HIIT class?

It isn’t that yoga is a better workout or better in general—in fact, yoga isn’t about exercise. Yoga is much more than just the physical poses you see or hear about; it has a whole philosophy behind it, and its true focus is on the mind. The physical postures are tools within this philosophy, guiding you towards greater mental clarity, emotional balance, and inner stillness.

At its core, yoga is defined as “chitta vritti nirodha,” which translates to “the restriction of the fluctuations of the mind.” This means that the ultimate goal of yoga is not about flexibility or mastering specific poses; it’s about calming the mind, gaining a deeper understanding of your thoughts, and recognizing how those thought patterns influence your decisions and life experiences. Yoga offers a pathway to self-awareness and inner peace.

For those who’ve tried yoga or haven’t yet—does knowing it’s focused on inner stillness rather than just flexibility make you more curious to explore it?

If you’re ready to experience yoga as more than a workout, join one of our classes and discover how it can support your mind as much as your body.

“No mud, no lotus” - Thich Nhat Hanh

A lotus flower can only grow in the mud, and without the mud, the beauty of the lotus flower will not emerge. It is a symbol of purity and rebirth.

Just like in our lives, without first knowing suffering, we cannot come to know compassion, understanding and love. It is through the adversity that we experience in life that we can mature, grow and become more beautiful in our own ways 🪷✨
