The requirement for not harming ourselves is to remain mindful, a sense of seeing what we are seeing clearly, with respect and compassion. This is what basic practice teaches us. But mindfulness does not stop at formal meditation; it helps us to relate to all the details of our lives. It helps us to see, hear, and smell without closing our eyes, ears, or nose. Relating honestly to the immediacy of our own experience and respecting ourselves enough not to judge ourselves is a long, lifelong journey.
