KNITWEAR LAB

KNITWEAR LAB Innovative, sustainable and design-driven knitwear solutions. KNITWEAR LAB develops smart technological applications for knitwear.

At our LAB in Almere - the Netherlands, our team of programmers and designers develops prototypes and run small productions. Our main production inquiries will be handled through our production LAB in Istanbul, Turkey, which is specialized in producing high-end knitwear in small quantities. Our production team of experienced professionals uses their exceptional craftsmanship to create high-end knitwear. Our knitwear specialists combine material research with latest knitwear technologies, which results in development of smart knitwear solutions. A combination of technological innovation and a design-driven perspective is what makes KNITWEAR LAB truly unique. Sustainable Projects – We have a progressive vision on sustainability. At KNITWEAR LAB we are constantly developing ethical knitwear, that can be made from biodegradable materials, regenerated and certified yarns, or just very beautiful long-lasting materials. Moreover, we make an emphasis on zero-waste production methods. With use of 3D knitting techniques, we are capable of knitting designs entirely out of one piece, without any waste. It is our responsibility to educate our clients on the impact their production has on our ecosystem. Virtual Knitting – Virtual Knitting by KNITWEAR LAB is a revolutionary method of industrial knitwear development: a connection between virtual and material (physical) knitting, which creates a whole new world for sustainable, cost-efficient and design-driven sample development and knitwear production. Virtual Knitting assists the customers in improving the designs on an early stage to create producible and realistic collections, simplify the design iteration process and to show multiple real life colourways. With use of KNITWEAR LAB’s extensive knitwear knowledge combined with the latest 3D software and Stoll Create Plus, a massive waste from the sample and pre-production stages can be reduced. Over the past years KNITWEAR LAB has developed a diverse portfolio with groundbreaking projects. From medical applications like compression stockings to technologically advanced sportswear, and from smart textiles with sensors to renewed yarns from recycled waste: our projects operate at the forefront of innovation! We would love to bring your vision to live. Feel free to reach out if you are interested in collaborating with us!

KNITWEAR LAB X THIJS VERHAAR
“Every stitch holds a story of craft, geometry and design.”
With over 30 years of hands-on experience in industrial knitting, designs graphic knitwear that balances precision with softness. Every piece is developed from fibre to finish in our own Knitwear Lab, where stitch, colour and geometry come together in a
warm, tactile embrace.

A highlight of the collection: SCARF LUMINA
Lumina explores light and rhythm through carefully placed geometric patterns. The sharp visual structure
contrasts with the softness of the knit, creating a scarf that feels refined, warm and expressive. Knitted in
extra-fine Italian merino wool, made to last.

wear. Designed to last a lifetime, using mono material only for easier recycling.

This is knitwear with intention.

Crimson Gilt, 2025
A ship of knitted light.
A thousand strands tied to memory,
labour, and the tides of empire.
Gold for prosperity.
Crimson for the cost.

Suspended in space, the vessel invites visitors to step into its core to feel colours change, histories collide, and perspectives shift.

The installation begins in Hirado and will ‘sail’ onward to Jakarta and Amsterdam, reorienting itself with each place and its past.

Created with the support and collaboration of partners in Japan, Indonesia, and the Netherlands.

A ship made of memory. A vessel suspended between three nations and centuries of exchange.

Crimson Gilt reimagines the 1748 VOC ship Amsterdam through over a thousand knitted strips of gold and crimson. Gold traces the prosperity the VOC brought to Japan; crimson reveals the violence, slavery, and extraction that marked its routes through Indonesia and beyond.

Walking through its interior is a passage through light, shadow, and contested history. A reminder that every journey holds more than one story.

After Hirado, the ship continues its course to Jakarta’s Maritime Museum and Amsterdam’s National Maritime Museum, shifting form as it meets each port’s narrative.

Created with the support and collaboration of partners in Japan, Indonesia, and the Netherlands.

‘Crimson Gilt’ is a suspended ship woven from a thousand knitted strips in gold and crimson. A contemporary reflection on the intertwined histories
of Japan, Indonesia, and the Netherlands through the VOC. Gold gestures toward prosperity; crimson uncovers the legacies of exploitation and colonialism along its trade routes.

Visitors step through the center of the ship, moving through shifting light and colour as they navigate shared yet conflicting histories.

After its debut in Hirado, the installation will travel to Museum Bahari (Jakarta) and the Scheepvaartmuseum (Amsterdam), reshaping itself at each port.

Created with the support and collaboration of partners in Japan, Indonesia, and the Netherlands.
