🐆 Is Ayurveda een leefstijl voor mij geworden? Werd mij laatst gevraagd.

Ja zeker! Al vanaf dat ik me begon te verdiepen in de Ayurveda, inmiddels bijna tien jaar geleden, inspireert het mij in mijn dagelijkse leven.

Ik geloof in de wijsheid van de natuur. De Ayurveda zie ik als ‘wijsheid voor het leven’. Dat is ook de betekenis van het woord ‘Ayurveda’ in het Sanskriet (Ayur: leven, Veda: het weten, kennis, wijsheid).

De Ayurvedische leefstijl ervaar ik als een ontdekkingsreis naar mijn ware aard. Tijdens deze ontdekkingsreis heb ik al veel over mezelf mogen leren. Vanuit een houding van ‘vanzelfsprekendheid’ waarin ik mijn lichaam vooral zag als een functioneel vehikel dat altijd moest kunnen presteren, ben ik mijn behoeften beter gaan begrijpen en probeer ik daar naar te leven. En dan worden voeding en leefstijl ineens veel meer dan alleen maar het eten dat ik eet en de manier waarop ik leef. Ik zie mij voeding en leefstijl als een medicijn. Ze kunnen mij ondersteunen in mijn gezondheid, elke dag, thuis en op reis.

De Ayurvedische leefstijl kan altijd en overal worden toegepast, dat is het mooie ervan!

Het betekent niet dat ik alles perfect volgens de Ayurvedische voorschriften doe, want dat lukt me niet! En ik geloof ook niet dat de Ayurveda het zo heeft bedoeld, om er een hele strikte leefstijl op na te houden. En ik weet dat mijn leefstijl op sommige momenten teveel van het één is en te weinig van het ander, waardoor het me uit balans kan halen. Maar dat zie ik ook weer als kansen om weer op zoek te gaan naar de juiste balans; fysiek, mentaal en emotioneel. 🐆

A question I often get at the beginning of a consultation.

I wish it was that easy! Or maybe better that it’s not…

In my opinion, Ayurveda is not about knowing your ‘type’. It is about what you need for your health, every moment in your life. Learning about your Ayurvedic type, or constitution, can be a lifelong journey. I see it as a journey of self-discovery. You get to experience the real you.

Ayurveda is a combination of two words from Sanskrit, “Ayur” meaning life, and “Veda” meaning knowledge, or wisdom. Ayurveda can be translated as ‘the wisdom of life.’ Wisdom for maintaining health, and preventing and curing disease. Ayurveda views the body, mind, soul, and senses as a holistic entity, which all need to be in balance to achieve health.

OK, back to the ‘type’.
In the journey to determining the Ayurvedic ‘type’, assuming that everything is a combination of the elements (space, air, fire, water, earth), which manifests through the three Doshas Vata (movement), Pitta (metabolism) and Kapha (structure), look at what characteristics of these elements are there within you. Some are balanced, some might be out of balance. This changes every moment, because we are always subject to change.

That is why Ayurveda can be a life long journey to self-discovery. It helps in creating more consciousness of your self, every moment in life, which can help in creating a lifestyle and diet that really fits your needs for balance and health.

🐆 The digestive system as the base for health

You have probably experienced some (or all!) of the following digestive issues in your life: stomach ache, a bloated feeling, pain in the (lower)back, nausea, diarrhoea, acid reflux, constipation and/or tiredness…to name some examples.

A lot of us don’t like to talk about our digestive issues. However, I found it quite striking when I read that research of the Dutch Institute for Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) found that almost 25% of the Dutch population experiences problems with their digestive system (RIVM, 2019).

The base for overall health
Ayurveda describes that a healthy digestive system forms the base for overall health. A balanced digestive system is important because:
- All our food - mental, emotional and physical food - can get digested properly;
- Toxin build up in the body can be reduced;
- The immune system can get stronger which can reduce the chance of getting sick.

The cause of disease
Disease is the result of a digestive system that is out of balance, and is unable to digest completely. This can result in toxins staying in the body for too long, disrupting the digestive processes. That can cause symptoms like I described above.

Every one has different needs
According to Ayurveda, our daily lifestyle and diet can help us balance our digestive system. It’s all about finding out what works best for you as an individual, because every one has different needs. No ‘one size fits all’. A few small changes can already make a big difference!

The wisdom of Ayurveda can help you become more aware of how you can take care of your digestive system, with a lifestyle and diet that really fit your needs.

An Ayurvedic consultation is an hour long 1:1 live online session with me.

Prior to the consultation, you will receive an intake questionnaire by email.
During the online consultation, we will discuss your lifestyle patterns and questions, anything that would like to share about your current health. In that way I can collect information about you and how you are experiencing your life at the moment.  
I will make a health plan for you that you can integrate in your daily life for the next 3-6 months.
A follow up consultation can be planned according to your wishes and needs.

A few (of many!) examples in which an Ayurvedic lifestyle and diet can help:
* Allergies;
* Anxiety;
* Burn-out and stress;
* (Chronic) pain;
* Digestive issues;
* Exhaustion;
* Fertility and pregnancy;
* Headache;

🐆 Why choose a natural approach to health?

According to traditional natural medicine, health is a state of balance on physical, mental en emotional level.
I believe in the wisdom of nature, which houses within each of us. And this wisdom can guide us to a healthy and balanced life, in contact with our nature.

Traditional natural medicine recognises that every individual is unique.  There is no ‘one size fits all’. We all have different needs and experience in a different way. By living according to your inner wisdom, you can achieve and maintain overall health in a natural way that fits your needs.
My approach to achieving and maintaining health is based on my experience and expertise with Ayurveda, the ‘wisdom of life’. Traditions and techniques that have been applied for thousands of years, that are still applicable and very much fitting in the times we are currently living in. An approach that fits you and that can contribute to sustainable overall health and a strong immune system. I see it as a journey to self-discovery.

A little bit about me…🐆

The name “Sophia” means “wisdom” in Ancient Greek language.
I believe in the wisdom that is nature, because it can lead us to a balanced and healthy life. I see my role as the guide who can share that wisdom.

Travel
With a Dutch father and Costa Rican mother, traveling has always been a big part of my life and is a great passion of mine.

The journey within
My vision on traveling has developed in recent years. From exploring the world when I was younger, towards an inward journey that I have been experiencing in recent years. I see it as an exploration of my true self.

I used to take my body, my health, for granted. I saw my body as a ‘vehicle’ that always had to perform at its best.

Natural medicine has learned me to better understand my needs, and put effort in living by them. This has improved my overall health, my self-acceptance and self-confidence, making me feel stronger than ever.
