The New Sculpture Department was founded in the beginning of 2011 by Kees Boevé and Lorenzo Quintanilla, they met each other while studying at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy Amsterdam. After working at this department for a while they decided it was time to start one of their own. A shadow department, which would combine craftsmanship, concept, the love for materials and sculpture all together. Professors where asked from different departments in the academy for guidance and counseling. This is how the New Sculpture Department was born. The NSD proposed different exhibitions and projects to try out this new form of working, and were received with great interest. After graduating, they decided that the NSD would continue as a sculpture collective or crew. NSD works together with artists from different backgrounds, disciplines and nationalities in various projects and on a wide variety of stages: Museums, Art fairs, independent exhibition spaces, Galleries and festivals. NSD will always seek different ways to research sculpture. NSD Headquarters is an old Garage in Amsterdam, which functions as studio and meeting place. This summer it will hold artists in residence and will be the home ground for different projects.
