Crying is such an important topic and one of the biggest challenges for (new) parents.
A crying baby confronts us with our own selves. We learn about our own reactions and coping mechanisms that we need to work with, accept and maybe try to modify.
The change in perspective I like to offer is - approach crying as a way of communicating. The baby is telling you “I need …” (fill in the blank). Sometimes we can DO something to fulfill that need and sometimes what is required is to just BE there. (I know, easier said than done).
Some of the tips Parents Share in class are:
-ask for someone to take over for a bit.
-if you are by yourself, leave the baby in a safe place and go take a breath, or a sip of water before you come back.
-talk/sing to the baby.
-talk to yourself - you got this… it will pass… my baby is ok, we just need to go through this together.
Anything you can add to the list?
How do you cope with those times when your baby cries a lot?
