As my patients can tell you, I prescribe magnesium for almost every hormonal condition including PCOS, insulin resistance, PMDD, migraines, and perimenopause.

Magnesium:
- regulates cortisol and the HPA axis
- reduces blood sugar and normalizes insulin
- supports thyroid
- aids sleep
- fuels cellular energy
- activates vitamin D
- slows aging, and
- normalizes the action of progesterone on the central nervous system.

A therapeutic dose of magnesium is at least 300 mg which usually equates to three capsules. If your label says “500 mg magnesium glycinate” per capsule, check if it is actually referring to “total” magnesium glycinate (magnesium plus glycine). And read carefully to see how much “equivalent magnesium” or "elemental magnesium" is provided by each capsule.

Food sources of magnesium include leafy greens, almonds, dark chocolate, and mineral water.

Progestins are not progesterone. Real progesterone has the advantage of being safer for breasts and usually nicer for mood.

It is estimated that 90% of women experience some menstrual cramping and about 20% suffer from dysmenorrhea, painful periods (University of Birmingham, 2012 https://www.aafp.org/afp/2012/0215/p386.html ). Painful cramps can be debilitating and interfere with daily activities. What can cause painf

An ultrasound can help to diagnose certain gynecological conditions including ovarian cysts and adenomyosis.
An ultrasound CANNOT diagnose PCOS or rule out PCOS.
Why?
Because PCOS is a hormonal condition, not a gynecological disease. In simplest terms, PCOS is the condition of having androgen excess (high male hormones) when all other causes of androgen excess have been ruled out.
The appearance of the ovaries doesn’t really come into it except to show that women with anovulatory cycles don't often have the "dominant" follicle associated with ovulation. The so-called "cysts" of the "polycystic" finding are actually just ovarian follicles or eggs, which are normal for the o***y!
Ovaries naturally have more follicles when we're young which is why young women are more likely to be OVERdiagnosed with “polycystic ovaries” when they actually have hypothalamic amenorrhea or endometriosis or no problem at all.
Ovaries naturally have fewer follicles when we're older which is why forty-something women are more likely to be UNDERdiagnosed as not having PCOS when they actually have the full-blown androgen excess and insulin resistance that IS PCOS.

IUDs and Women’s Health I’ve been advocating for women’s choice for many years, supporting women’s autonomy to make the decisions that are right for them, at that moment in time. But it’s important to have…

Polycystic ovaries are not cysts. They're follicles or eggs which are normal for the o***y.
You have more eggs when you're younger, so you're quite likely to have "polycystic ovaries" when you're younger.
Having polycystic ovaries does NOT mean you have the hormonal condition PCOS. It actually does not mean anything at all.
Polycystic ovaries can show up on an ultrasound when:
- you're perfectly normal
- you have PCOS
- you have hypothalamic amenorrhea
- you have endometriosis, or PMDD, or any number of completely different issues.
There is such a thing as ovarian cysts that are abnormal structures and can cause pain and other symptoms. Ovarian cysts are not polycystic ovaries.
Also, you can have full-blown PCOS (the hormonal condition) and have normal-appearing ovaries. PCOS is best defined as "the condition of androgen excess when all other causes of androgen excess have been ruled out."

Struggling with hair loss? There’s no one-size-fits-all treatment because there’s no one-size-fits-all cause.
To find your hair loss solution, you need to think through nine different factors.
- blame your birth control
- ovulate to make estrogen and progesterone
- rule out PCOS
- check your thyroid
- consider iron
- reduce inflammation
- eat more carbs
- take zinc
- play the long game.

Progesterone is your calming, soothing, happiness hormone. It lightens periods and reduces anxiety. It also boosts metabolism, reduces inflammation, and is great for hair and skin.
Do you make enough progesterone? Here are four signs of possible progesterone deficiency:
- a short luteal phase
- low temperatures in the luteal phase
- fertile mucus in the luteal phase
- spotting in the luteal phase

Yes, hormonal birth control can cause depression, hair loss, headaches, gut damage, and autoimmune disease. And, yes, experts have pretty much known that since the 1960s.
The book "In the Name of The Pill" opens with the question "What did they know, and when did they know it?" and it's a harrowing account of how medicine spent decades choosing to NOT SEE the hazards of contraceptive drugs.
Read the book at your own risk. You may end up feeling as devasted as I do since I read it. Medicine has not had women's best interests at heart.
Please share your story.
