Get back to handball training with improving leg and core strength.

These exercises help with the improve of knee control, as well as overall leg strength and its ex*****on in relation with core stability.

The study shows the effect of 15 minutes warm up training in lowering the risk of anterior cruciate ligament injuries by 64%.

Check out this interesting webinar about the upper limb quadrant. Main points:

- Always take the Kinetic Chain into account in your strength/rehab/prevention training. "80% of the power of throwing actions comes from the lower quadrant and the trunk!"

Beliefs and daily living pattern (sleep, stress) can influence your training performance

- The clavicle in shoulder rehabilitation:

Action of Acromion-Clavicular Joint enables optimal positioning of scapula. The clavicle is important for shoulder elevation, it posteriorly elevates, and acts as a crank to elevate acriomion. If we don't get posterior rotation of the clavicle, there will be not elevation or upward rotation of the scapula, causing less force transfer and eventually reduces load on local structures.

The important role of the upper trapezius, rotator cuff, deltoid and serrarus anterior in the optimalization of scapula position

the role of thoracic spine rotation in throwing mechanism (unilateral movements), which in the cocking position is dominant together with adduction, max external rotation and thoracic extension

- Return to sport (RTS) in overhead athletes

Tests: shoulder strength and mobility, throwing motion and technique, aerobic capacity, sport seprcific workload

the throwing program in handball players to RTS is controlled more about intensity of velocity then distance and number of throws

Examples of incorporating...

-trunk & shoulder strength/stability

-heavier loading of the shoulder in throwing position

-heavier power training

-heavier acceleration/deceleration training

-Return to sport criteria:

-full ROM under load without player's pain

-At least 20% stronger dominand vs non dominant

-At least 80% stronger external rotation vs internal rotation

-restore aerobic capacity

-pain free return to throwing test 3 times in one week

- super confident of playing match

The border of shoulder problems in handball players and how we can minimize it.

Blog Post van Martin Asker PhD

The burden of shoulder problems in handball players and how can we minimize it.

Handball is a physical demanding sport with a lot of sprints, side cutting movement, jumps, tackling and wrestling and on top of that a very specific repeated movement; throwing (1-3).

In this short blog I will give an overview of the burden of shoulder problems in handball players, why they often get injured and what we can do to reduce the risk of developing shoulder problems.

Martin Asker PhD will be in Amsterdam on the 22nd of September with his course the Handball Shoulder. Tickets available on https://incitus.nl/cursussen/martin-asker-de-handbal-schouder/de-handbal-schouder/de-handbal-schouder/

Do you train your "mind muscle"?

Don't get distracted, don't let negative emotions influence your performance.

Find your own strategy to build awareness. Train your mind to stay always in the present which is when you can be at your physical and mental peak performance.

Do LOAD and RISK FACTORS have an association in shoulder injury rate?

The article from Møller et al. (2017) shows that an increase in weekly load in association with scapula dyskinesis or reduced external rotational strength, increases the rate of shoulder injuries in youth handball players.

Abstract Background : Knowledge of injury patterns, an essential step towards injury prevention, is lacking in youth handball. Aim:  To investigate if an increa...

RISK FACTORS for shoulder injuries in overhead athletes.
Shoulders are susceptible to injuries in handball. The majority of shoulder problems are due to overuse injuries.
The infographic gives an overview of the factors to take into consideration when treating overhead athletes.

Shoulder warm up = to add in preparation of matches and trainings' load!

The first exercises focus on the control of scapulathoracic and shoulder muscles in the whole range of motion. Muscle coordination is important to avoid tissue overload in the long term.

With the last exercise you train eccentrically the external rotators of the shoulder. In fact, reduced external rotation strength has been found a risk factor for shoulder injuries.

During the summer break DO NOT FORGET TO LOAD YOUR SHOULDER!

A major risk of overall injury is a rapid increase in training load, especially after a period of rest.
Shoulder pain has been reported to occur between 19% and 36% at season start.
This has an impact on player's performance (e.i. speed, strength). A prolonged exposure to pain can lead to a change of the throwing pattern to avoid the painful movement. Eventually, player adapts by changing to a less optimal shooting technique.

Come prepared to the start of next season!
Here's an example of simple exercises that can help to keep the loading up! For other exercises see: skadefri.co

What about physiological aspects in handball? Lars Bojsen Michalsik will talk about "Physical demands and physical training in team handball" at the Sports medical Workshop "Medical and Training Aspects in Handball"

We are proud to haveLars Bojsen Michalsik (DK), PhD, as speaker at the Medical and Training Aspects in Handball Congress on 16/09 at the LUNEX University.
He is a sport scientist at the Department of Sport Science and Clinical Biomechanics, Muscle Physiology and Biomechanics Research Unit, University of Southern Denmark. He has written the world’s first doctoral dissertation on the physiology of team handball. He is lecturer for both the Danish and the European Handball Federation teaching at the Master Coach Course. He is a former elite athlete in athletics and has played 16 seasons in Danish Premier Male Team Handball League. Furthermore, he has been physical trainer in the Danish Premier Soccer League, for several individual elite athletes including tennis player Caroline Wozniacki, in the Danish Premier Team Handball League (men & women), for the Danish Female National Handball Team (Olympic Gold 2000, European Champions 2002), and for the Brazilian Female National Handball Team at the Olympics in London 2012 (no. 6) and recently in Rio 2016 (no.5). He will have a presentation “Physical demands and physiological profiles in elite team handball. Are there differences between male and female players?” as well as a practical workshop “Physical training in team handball - examples of training on the court with the ball”. He will also have an additional presentation and training workshop on Sunday for Handball coaches entitled “Physical demands and physical training in team handball”.
