Hello from Ashton Court 👋
There has been a manor house on this site since the 11th century, although this particular house dates from the 1840s. For centuries it was the home of the Smyth family and was handed to Britsol City Council after the last member of the Smyth family died. Do you think, as a Smith, I might be able to claim it? 😝

Feels like this author has a bit of a bee in his bonnet about the spelling of Dutch place names, and we really can't blame him. To add insult to injury, the town he refers to as Ymuiden is now called IJmuiden! Edam remains the same thankfully.
What's the strangest Dutch place name you have found?

When researching your ancestors, have you ever come across someone with an oddly specific job title?

Here we have the marriage record of Hermanus Baljet in 1892. He is recorded as being a "suikerbakker" - literally a "sugar baker" (a baker of sweet things) - while his father-in-law is a "paardenslachter" - a horse butcher!

Have you got any odd professions in your family?

After spending ages trying to find out what happened to the Goodwin family after the 1911 census, I was very pleased to find them listed on a ship's manifest...until I spotted the name of the ship.
Frederick, Augusta, and all six of their children died during the sinking of the Titanic. Only the body of the youngest child, Sidney, was recovered and was buried in Halifax under the inscription "an unknown child." He was eventually identified in 2002.

In my research, I have used Boyd's Marriage Index more times than I can count. If you haven't come across it, this is a compliation of over 3.5 million UK marriage records.

But only this week did I learn that this isn't Percival Boyd's only work! He also collated Boyd's Inhabitants of London, which details the lives and family trees of over 70,000 Londoners between 1500 and 1900.

What new (to you) genealogy resource have you come across recently?

Another happy customer! 🥳
This was a really fun case full of unusual Dutch first names, and many changes of surname. But we got there in the end and I was able to get the family tree back to the 1600s! 🩷

What fabulous names! After a day of Johns, Edwards, and Jameses, it was a nice change to come across this family with sons called Enoch, Wardill, William, Frederic, Harvey, Bertie and Percival. Sadly they were not the family I was looking for, but it was a nice break all the same 🥰

Having found the McFee children's birth records, I know that they should be aged 13, 11, 9 and 4, not 18, 16, 12 and 9. Apparently this family were terrible at keeping track of ages!

Of course Brownlow Baker was a Professor of Music, living next to an Assistant Surgical Instrument Maker, a Book Folder, and a Silk Hat Crown Maker. With a name like that what else would he be?
This street sounds like a fascinating place to live!
