๐Ÿ‘€ Looking back on COP16Riyadh! Last week, Werner Fischer led the Catalyze delegation of five pioneering startups to COP16 together with Edde Lyons. During the event, hosted by our partners UN Convention to Combat Desertification, they showcased outstanding private-sector leadership in land restoration and drought resilience, highlighting the power of innovation, investment, and collaboration. Throughout the week we:

- Presented innovative solutions to relevant stakeholders from public and private sectors
- Hosted panel discussions uniting efforts to tackle the urgent challenge of desertification
- Established meaningful relationships driving forward the vision of a more sustainable and resilient future

Our delegation unlocked new opportunities to scale their impact globally and we expanded our footprint within the global business for impact community, which we are very proud of! Special thanks to the platform provided by the UN Convention to Combat Desertification, ChangeNOW, World Economic Forum.

Together with our delegation, Catalyze has been actively supporting the UNCCDโ€™s Business 4 Land initiative accelerating their ambitious goal to restore 1.5 billion hectares of degraded land by 2030. This initiative seeks to catalyse private sector engagement in tackling land degradation and drought, advancing sustainable land and water management practices. We look forward to continuing this partnership!

๐Ÿš€ Thanks to the startups: Sand to Green, YieldComputer, Farmula, Spatialise and Nature Robots.

๐Ÿ’ก Searching for next generation viral targets! The Horizon Europe SHIELD project has received โ‚ฌ8M in funding to combat viruses with high pandemic potential like Dengue, Zika, and Lassa. The 5 year project, which commences in January 2025, will elucidate and valorise understudied mechanisms related to viral entry, such as glycan shieldingโ€”a mechanism that viruses use to evade immune detection.

As Professor Floris Rutjes, Director Institute for Molecules and Materials - Radboud University explains, โ€œif we show that this is a viable approach, then the impact might be much bigger than only for this programme. It could inform other antiviral strategies and be useful in vaccine development.โ€

The SHIELD consortium features 10 leading European institutions including Heidelberg University (Project Coordinator), Radboud University, and Institut Pasteur.

Catalyze is proud to have supported Prof. Rutjes and the SHIELD consortium towards securing their Horizon Europe grant.

๐Ÿ’ฐ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ โ‚ฌ4 million EIC Pathfinder funding to revolutionise precision nutrition in diabetes! The hashtag project, led by the Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Basic Metabolic Research (CBMR) at the University of Copenhagen (Kรธbenhavns Universitet), will use continuous glucose monitor data from non-diabetic individuals to identify early glycemic deviation patterns, or โ€œglucotypesโ€. It promises significant societal, economic, and environmental benefits in the EU and worldwide.

The project brings together leading experts in nutrition, metabolic diseases, glycobiology, gut microbiome, epidemiology, and machine learning from all over Europe. The Weizmann Institute of Science (๐Ÿ‡ฎ๐Ÿ‡ฑ), Universidad de Santiago de Compostela (๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡ธ), Maastricht University (๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ), Leiden University Medical Center (๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ), and ILSI Europe (๐Ÿ‡ง๐Ÿ‡ช) are participating next to project leaders Novo Nordisk Foundation CBMR (๐Ÿ‡ฉ๐Ÿ‡ฐ).

We heard Project Coordinator Jordi Merino's (Associate Professor, University of Copenhagen) thoughts on the project and on Catalyzeโ€™s support towards this success.

โ€œThe GLUCOTYPES Consortium capitalises on advancements in wearable technologies, innovative perspectives on diabetes nosology, and breakthroughs in molecular biology and bioinformatics to bolster the foundation of evidence required for developing precision nutrition strategies in diabetes.โ€
