1️⃣ 5️⃣ 🎉 Last week we celebrated Patricia J.W.A.M. Celie's 15 year anniversary at Catalyze!

Patricia has made a huge impact for so many of our clients throughout her career. Over the years, she has gone from writing (and winning) a wide range of Dutch and European grants, to playing a key role in the development our business and strategic consulting services, to now serving as Principal Consultant and our representative to the EIC. We are proud to have you with us Patricia!

Patricia shared:
"I started at Catalyze on a Monday, and by Tuesday afternoon I was already sitting at the kitchen table of a highly respected professor who had the ambition to develop a drug for a disease for which no treatment existed. Today, that drug candidate is in late-stage clinical testing on the path toward approval.

In those early days, Catalyze was a young company too. We worked from a small, homely office in Bussum (NL), alongside just a few consultants and founders, Theodoor & Jalal. Fast forward to today, and we’re an established market leader – ranked among top consultancy firms and recognised as a Great Place to Work.

I’m grateful for the great colleagues, past and present, and I want to thank all the fantastic people I’ve worked with across different companies and in academia. I really value seeing projects, companies, and great innovations evolve into real-life products, on the shelves and in the clinic. I’m looking forward to what the future will bring, and to continuing to support teams with business strategy and attracting finance. Let’s make impact!"

🎉 Our clients were awarded €17.5M grant funding under Horizon Europe Cluster 6!

In January we received the exciting news that two of our Horizon Europe submissions to September 2025 calls were awarded. Both projects secured funding under Horizon Europe Cluster 6: Food, Bioeconomy, Natural Resources, Agriculture and Environment.

Principal Consultant and Horizon expert, Helen Pothuizen, PhD, shared:
"We are proud to have supported these impactful projects towards securing €17.5 million grant funding under the biodiversity and circular bioeconomy calls, HORIZON-CL6-2025-01-BIODIV-03 and HORIZON-CL6-2025-01-CIRCBIO-09. Big thanks to our clients for the trust and to the team at Catalyze for your dedication, teamwork, and resilience towards this success!"

Congratulations to our clients and team for bringing these projects to life!

🇧🇪 🤝 SMARTSHAPE-project enters its final year!

Last week, the SMARTSHAPE consortium gathered in Brussels for a combined consortium and review meeting, with the EU Project Officer and our external reviewer. The meeting marked an important moment of reflection and discussing the next steps of SMARTSHAPE's continuous blood pressure monitoring technology.

We are a proud partner in SMARTSHAPE delivering project management services, in addition to communication and dissemination.

Coralie Zurstrassen, Project Manager, commented:
"The SMARTSHAPE meeting in Brussels was a key milestone for the consortium. It was inspiring to see the very promising results coming together and to get a clear picture of what the future of blood pressure management could look like. We are now entering the final phase of the project, fully aligned and ready to move forward."

As SMARTSHAPE enters its final year under the Horizon Europe programme, the focus is shifting toward consolidating the preclinical results and taking the next steps to secure follow-up funding. Increasing the project's visibility and disseminating the results to the right stakeholders are crucial in this process.

Vera van de Donk, Science Communication Advisor, mentioned:
"In this final year, our communication and dissemination efforts will increasingly focus on targeting industry and potential investors. At the same time, continued engagement with the medical community remains a key priority. The SMARTSHAPE technology has many promising applications beyond uncontrolled chronic hypertension and post-stroke patients. Therefore, we are also gathering input from clinicians across different specialties to better understand additional use cases and needs in hypertension monitoring."

🥂Celebrating ~€3M ERC Consolidator grant success!

Last week we had the pleasure of visiting Professor Katja van den Hurk at Sanquin in Amsterdam. It was a great moment for Professor Van den Hurk and Mithila Burute, PhD, Lead Consultant on the project, to celebrate their year-long collaboration in the build-up to Professor Van den Hurk's prestigious ERC Consolidator award.

Professor Van den Hurk's project, DONOR-PROTECT, is truly one-of-a-kind, with the potential to positively impact blood-donors across the world. Together with the interdisciplinary project team, she aims to develop and validate the first-ever personalised donor health protection strategy that optimises safe blood and plasma donation while addressing donor variability.

👀Keep your eyes peeled for the full interview with Professor van den Hurk, coming soon!

The project is led by Prof. Dr. Thérèse van Amelsvoort (Coordinator) and Dr. Sophie Leijdesdorff (Vice Coordinator) of Maastricht University.

Donna, Manager Project Management, shared:
“Looking back on a successful consortium meeting, it’s inspiring to see so many talented people coming together to work on a topic that feels more important than ever. 🩺 Recently we held a workshop with Rubik Hub for healthcare and healthtech startups on how to approach non-dilutive funding in Europe.

Vlad Grecu (Country Manager Spain & Portugal) shared a practical overview of the main European funding opportunities in healthcare, including:
- Horizon Europe and how RIA calls differ from more commercially oriented calls
- How to use the TRL map to match your stage with the right instrument
- Where EIC and Eurostars fit (and when they’re the better route than an RIA)

Thanks to Rubik Hub for hosting and to all the startups who joined and participated in the discussion.

🧪 €600K Eurostars award for Utilizer to advance rapid point-of-care diagnostics for urinary tract infections!

Utilizer (SE) is developing a dipstick urinary tract infection (UTI) test with a quantitative digital bioassay and smartphone readout, bringing accurate testing to primary care, elderly care, and home settings. UTIs are among the most common bacterial infections, yet misdiagnosis leads to 40–60% of antibiotic treatments being unnecessary.

Utilizer’s Eurostars project, UTI-CARE, aims to change that by delivering Utilizer-AST, which provides same-day results with bacterial detection, species identification, and antibiotic susceptibility in a single workflow. Catalyze is proud to have supported Utilizer in crafting their successful Eurostars submission.

“Our Eurostars funding enables us to get access to relevant players to develop the best product for market in the shortest possible time.” says Sofia Bertling, PhD, CEO & Founder. Joining Utilizer in UTI-CARE are project partners, Karolinska Institutet (SE) and M2-Automation GmbH (DE).

🎉 €900K for Green Legacy GmbH to advance Polysorb+ via EIT Food’s Impact Funding Framework!

Green Legacy is developing Polysorb+, a superabsorbent, biodegradable polymer soil additive that boosts water retention and soil conditioning for high-value crops. In SPRINT, the team will tailor Polysorb+ for potato crops to directly address declining European potato production.

“Polysorb+ will help farmers buffer drought risk, cut irrigation by 30–50%, improve nutrient efficiency, and stabilise or increase yields — accelerating the shift to regenerative, water-smart agriculture,” says Enrique Nacif, Co-Founder & Managing Director.

With project partners, LUT University, SPRINT will quantify Polysorb+’s environmental value from cradle-to-farm-gate through a comprehensive Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) in real farming systems and large farmer-led trials across Central Europe.

Catalyze supported Green Legacy in developing the successful EIT Food submission and is now providing project management services for the SPRINT project.
