ROBERT INDIANA – LORD BYRON
Seriagraph poster (edition only 18) 2045x1016 mm; 80½x40 inches. List Art Poster, HKL, Ltd. 1972.
Publisher: Juiliard Theater Opera
Lord Byron + prototype
Unbelievable masterpiece
One of the biggest Serigraphs Robert Indiana ever made.
This is an awesome - like you would find in a museum - piece (set of 2)
· The “prototype” always wanted to know how Robert Indiana came op with an idea for a new serigraph , piece of art? This prototype ( on canvas) shows you the way he was thinking, with original handwriting – information, drawings etc
· And the result ( a stunning huge XX serigraph : hand signed and hand numbered in a edition of only 4
This is the most awesome art combination which is a “conversation piece” (or Natalie.. how do you say something?) – imagine those 2 huge Serigraphs hanging on yr wall
This piece has a fantastic provenance (… Natalie… you know the guys from the estate – where I bought this one on yr auction). But I bought it cheap – because nobody did understand what it was. So hopefully you can add all relevant info to a fantastic story – to be told within the auction
he World Premiere of Lord Byron by Robert Indiana is a 1972 original screen print, presented in a custom box plexiglass frame with a side profile depth of 2 inches. The overall dimensions of the frame are 80.5 x 40 inches. This striking piece was published by the Juilliard Theater Opera for a three-act presentation by Virgil Thompson at Lincoln Center in April 1972
Lord Byron
"'Lord Byron' was commissioned by the Metropolitan Opera in the mid-1960's, but the Met eventually pulled out of the deal. Juilliard students did the premiere in 1972 and their successors have revived it several times since." (New York Times, September 2, 1991). Indiana also designed the cover for the muscial score of the opera which was published in 1975. This serigraph was published as part of the List art project which "got under way in 1961, when the List family foundation made a grant of $200,000 to New York’s Lincoln Center to pay for well-known artists to design more elaborate posters than might otherwise have been used." (Time Magazine, August 16, 1968).

In 1968, marking the 250th anniversary of its founding, the Texas city of San Antonio was chosen as the first site of the World's Fair in the American Southwest. Robert Indiana, who became a sensation in 1964 when he designed his famous "LOVE" graphic, was commissioned to design the official fair poster. The typography, solid and saturated bold colors and geometric lines are characteristic of his trademark style. This poster was Indiana's second World's Fair commission; his first being for the 1964 World's Fair in Flushing, New York, for which he constructed a 20x20-foot illuminated metal structure that read, "EAT."
