Wat New House (Nuova Casa) betekent. Misschien is dat wel de reden dat Enrico reeds op jonge leeftijd Nederland verliet. Op zoek naar nieuwe horizonten. Liftend trok hij door Europa om daarna over te steken naar Mexico. Enige jaren later doorkruiste hij de Verenigde Staten. Pas na een verblijf daar van ruim 10 jaar keerde hij naar Nederland terug om zich uiteindelijk in Apeldoorn te vestigen. Een
plaats waar hij na al weer enige jaren zijn atelier heeft. Dat avontuurlijke, die vrijheidsdrang, het verlangen om naar nieuwe wegen te zoeken, vinden we ook terug in het werk van Enrico. Hij maakt abstract werk – op hout en op canvas – dat zich kenmerkt door een grote frisheid en oorspronkelijkheid in kleuren en vormen. Het resulteert in kunstwerken met een tijdloos en universeel karakter. Opvallend in zijn werk is het overrompelend kleurgebruik en het ontstaan van een ruimtelijkheid die – niet geheel toevallig – aan het abstracte werk van Gerhard Richter doet denken (Enrico is een bewonderaar van zijn werk). Ook Enrico legt vele kleurbanen over elkaar door de verschillende verflagen te bewerken met een brede spatel, waardoor intrigerende kleurbanen ontstaan. Maar waar het non-figuratieve werk van Richter vooral verticale en horizontale accenten kent zijn de schilderwerken van Enrico avontuurlijker. Minder voorspelbaar zouden wij bijna durven zeggen dankzij de avontuurlijke dynamiek die zijn werk ook typeert. Zo creëert Enrico via zijn abstracte werk nieuwe werkelijkheden die reminiscenties oproepen aan de verre landschappen en streken die hij in het verleden bereisde. Tegelijk ziet hij deze werken ook als een verbeelding van zijn huidige leven. De abstractie trekt Enrico door in de naamgeving van zijn werken, omdat hij ervoor kiest – om zoals hij zelf zegt – om de toeschouwer niets op te leggen. De ervaring en emotie bij het aanschouwen van het werk moet uit de toeschouwer zelf komen. Zo wordt de bekijker van het werk even belangrijk als de maker van het werk. "Enrico Nieuwenhuis, un'avventura in pittura." ("An adventure in painting.")
Enrico’s surname is Nieuwenhuis. This translates as New House (Nuova Casa). Perhaps this is the reason Enrico left the Netherlands at a young age. He hitchhiked through Europe after which he crossed the ocean to go to Mexico. A few years later he travelled all over the United States. Only after having stayed there for over 10 years he returned to the Netherlands to settle in Apeldoorn. Since several years he has his studio here. This adventurous disposition, this craving for freedom, the desire to search for new roads, is something that can be found in Enrico’s work. He creates abstract work – on wood and on canvas – that is characterised by a great vivacity and originality in colours and shapes. This results in artwork of a timeless and universal character. A striking feature of his work is the overwhelming use of colour and the origination of spatiality that – not completely coincidentally – reminds of the abstract work of Gerhard Richter (Enrico is an admirer of his work). Enrico also overlaps many bands of colour by modelling different layers of paint with a broad palette knife, through which intriguing strips of colour come into being. Where, however, Richter’s non-figurative work knows predominantly vertical and horizontal accents, Enrico’s work is more adventurous. We almost dare to say it is less predictable thanks to the adventurous dynamic that is characteristic to his work. Through his abstract work, Enrico creates new realities that evoke reminiscences of the faraway landscapes he used to travel. Simultaneously he sees these works as a representation of his current life. The abstraction is carried further in the naming of his works as he chooses to – in his words – not impose anything on the spectator. The experience and emotion that arises in the observation of a work of art should come from the spectator. In doing so, the spectator of the artwork is of the same importance as the maker of the artwork. Enrico invites you to participate in the adventure that each of his work is, over and over again.
