4 years ago, after submitting my material sample of pure crystallised salt (NaCl) in a competition organised by Atelier Luma/ , Maja Hoffmann and selected the material for the LUMA Gehry Tower in Arles.

Which initiated an exciting journey with Atelier LUMA to turn this material sample into the Wall of Salt. Pushing the boundaries of using a natural material and process in a large-scale architectural context. I'm very proud of the end result that was created with an amazing and diverse team.

Merging the boundaries between science and art, Studio Karlijn Sibbel not just designs her products, but, in a way, also her materials. After winning the ArtEZ Design Stipendium 2015 at Groote Sociëteit Arnhem, the Dutch product designer was granted the opportunity to conduct research at the world’s first communal bio hacking lab: Genspace. Until the end of June, Karlijn will be exploring possibilities to connect production methods to natural processes by working with bio-organisms.
