The Gentleman

School wasn’t a real passion for the little Richard. The only thing that he really wanted was to drive one day a beautiful automobile.

One morning at school, he was punished for having not done his homework. Extremely angry, his teacher told him that he wouldn’t become of anything in life, that no one would be interested in him and assured him that he would be the laughing stock of the town.

Thirty years later when Lord Richard Walter Eigler bought himself this magnificent sports car equipped with 12 in-line cylinders, a certain jealousy was awakened in his neighbors. His frequent promenades down the streets of Coronda City at the wheel of his splendid automobile drew envious looks and comments. He wasn’t bothered by this, to the contrary, he experienced a subtle and soft trembling of pleasure.

The Duchess

The majestic Rolls Royce glided without making a sound along the roads of the town of Mar del Plata. Daisy, the little Pekinese of Lady Marta Spelanzon, Duchesse de Plataci, dozed on the back seat at the side of her mistress.

“Perkins”, said Lady Marta to her chauffer, “Please drive slower, you are going to mess up the hair of my little Daisy.”

Perkins, raised an eyebrow, glanced in his rear view mirror, raised his foot a little off the accelerator and asked, “Does this speed suit Madame?”

The Duchesse, without saying a word, caressed Daisy’s diamond collar, lifted her head and drew a long smoke on her cigarette holder. The tip of the cigarette turned an incandescent red. Lady Marta, couldn’t hide a small smile of satisfaction, and a gentle spiral of smoke enveloped her capeline hat.

The Football Player

‘Bowleggs’ Alfredo Pozzi, was an ace, a master at dribbling the ball. During the Richieri school matches no one could stop him. We all envied him. One day he managed to dribble past two huge brutes from sixth grade. Can you imagine that? He left them standing in their tracks. A genius. And the touch of the ball that he had was…..incredible. But of course, later, when he grew up, he learned to appreciate the good life, eat well, drink well…and you know, when we start to get a little chubby, things get complicated.

Last Sunday we had a match at the club. Listen-up, I’ll tell you what happened and it gives me goose bumps. Bowleggs Pozzi was playing number 10 position, after about 15 minutes, it was a shame to watch him. For his first corner kick, I don’t what happened, but, in fact, he wanted to kick the ball.

He got ready, took a few steps and ….made one of those magical kicks. If he had touched the ball, it would have been playable, but his stomach caused him to lose balance and he took a huge swipe in the grass.

This week, I tried calling every day, but didn’t get an answer…I don’t know, he must have left on a trip.

The Big Move

Jean Marc has a lot of experience….experience in moving. It was the 18th time he had moved. He was so used to moving that when changing houses, he didn’t even empty the fridge or washing machine. “It doesn’t really make a difference,” he said. He just loaded up the truck and drove to the new address. The houses that he rented were less and less comfortable and getting smaller and smaller, it was definitely hard times. Finally his wife said that it seemed easier to live in the truck than to load and unload the furniture each time. Jean Marc thought about it and came to the conclusion that the idea wasn’t really so bad after all. At least this way, he wouldn’t have to defrost the fridge.

The Flight attendant

The aeroplane departed on time. Domenico, as usual, chose an aisle seat so he could stretch his legs.
Just as the air hostess was about to serve dinner, the aeroplane started to experience small jolts, that became increasingly severe. The food trolleys were swiftly stowed, and the turbulence got worse. Loose objects were flying through the air. Domenico felt his stomach turn, a tremor ran through his body, and he thought he was going to faint.
Ten minutes later, calm was restored, and the flight stabilised. The air hostess came back with her trolley and, picking up a tray in each hand, she asked him with a friendly smile, “Chicken or pasta...?”
“A sick bag, please!” replied Domenico, covering his mouth and trying to stay as still as possible.

The Buggy Buddies

Even if it looked like rain, Bob wanted to play golf at all costs. It really wasn’t easy, but he managed to convince Steve, his best friend, to play a game. After having selected the perfect club for a rainy day, Bob prepared for his first swing when a black cloud began to cover the sky. He raised the club above his shoulders in a perfect backswing. A few small drops began to wet the green, but he concentrated on where he was going to hit the ball, he raised his iron a little higher when….lightening struck barely ten meters away. Even if he was still shaking three days later, he managed to make the longest drive in history. We still haven’t found the ball.

Paris, Bois de Boulogne

The warm afternoon was perfect for a little game of petanque. Marcel Dupont prepared with care a set of petanque balls; he spit shined them with a soft cloth to bring out their full luster. He put the leash on Sandokan, the old family bulldog and they both went to the Bois de Boulogne where he sat on a bench and waited for his friends. He began to doze off when a deep gasp made him jump.

He turned his head and saw a woman of a certain age, cute, well-dressed, wearing a hat which matched her outfit. She held a book close to her chest and with her eyes half closed, repeated “C’est l’amour, c’est l’amour”. When the romantic woman realized that she was being observed, she smiled nervously and began to bat her eyes while looking at Marcel from the corner of her eye. Blushing, she opened her mouth slightly and let escape a long sigh.

Marcel wrinkled his brow, raised his eyes to the sky, shook his head from right to left, spit one more time on the petanque balls and rubbed them with his shirt. He told himself his friends were really making him wait too long.

The Doctor

Doctor José Batle was a recognized expert in his field. His diagnoses, always exact, saved the lives of hundreds of people and earned him the admiration of high society. Everything was going perfectly until the day when, arrived to his office, the most well-known actress in Hollywood, the ravishing Marilyn Hayworth, victim of a sprained little finger.
Without wasting an instant, Doctor Batle had the patient take off her clothes to assure himself that she had no other complications anywhere on her body. After a thorough and detailed examination, he confirmed that…he had fallen deeply in love.
The diva thanked him for all his diligent attention and left the office leaving in the air behind her a suggestive perfume of camellia. Ever since that day, Doctor Batle never stops thinking of the great Marilyn, hoping that she sprains another finger so that he can perform a new examination, this time even more detailed.
