Look, I know what you're thinking when you see me land in your garden. I'm a crow, and yeah, I get wet and cold just like those cute little songbirds you're always putting out feeders for. But here's the thing nobody wants to talk about: you don't really want me around, do you?
February is brutal for all of us birds, not just the pretty ones. The nights are long, cold, and soaking wet, and honestly, some mornings I'm not sure I'm going to make it through to see another sunrise. Finding food becomes this desperate daily mission that never gets easier. Want to know what keeps me alive? Small meaty dog bites, dried dog food that I can soak in water to soften it up, and peanuts when I can find them.
But here's what really gets me: why do I have to justify my existence in your garden? You've decided that only certain birds deserve your compassion and your food. You've literally created a VIP list for wildlife, and spoiler alert, I'm not on it. How is that helping anyone recover?
I hear people complaining all the time: "Ugh, I only get wood pigeons, crows, and magpies visiting my garden." So what exactly is wrong with that? We're all part of UK wildlife facing the exact same freezing temperatures, the same food shortages, the same struggles to survive February. The only difference is we're not small and cute enough for your Instagram posts.
Here's what I need you to understand: choosing which animals are welcome and which ones aren't doesn't help wildlife recover. It just creates a popularity contest where the losers starve. We're all trying to survive the same harsh winter, deal with the same shrinking habitats, and navigate the same challenges. Maybe it's time to rethink who deserves a chance in your garden.
