The immunology community deeply mourns the passing of Dr. Alexandru Vlagea, a respected immunologist, valued colleague, and dear friend to many.

Alexandru was an active member of the European Society for Immunodeficiencies since the early stages of his career, and we always enjoyed his company at every meeting. Throughout his professional career, he made meaningful contributions to the field of immunology, with a particular focus on primary immunodeficiencies. His clinical commitment, scientific curiosity, and collaborative spirit helped advance the care and understanding of patients with immune disorders. He was a generous professional, always willing to share his expertise, support others, and contribute to multidisciplinary and international collaborations within the immunodeficiency community.

Beyond his professional achievements, Alexandru will be remembered for his warmth, kindness, humour, and humanity. Those who had the privilege of working with him knew not only an excellent immunologist but also a supportive colleague, a loyal friend, a devoted father, and a beloved husband. His presence made every shared moment brighter, and his loss leaves an immense void in all who knew him.

We would like to express our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues at the Department of Immunology of Hospital Clínic de Barcelona (Spain), and to all those who had the privilege of sharing part of their journey with him.

Alexandru will remain in our memory with deep gratitude, affection, and admiration.

Your research on inborn errors of immunity belongs at Maastricht.
Still on the fence about whether your work is ready? Consider this a friendly nudge →

Because complex questions are rarely solved in isolation.

And research is never truly finished. There’s always the next question.
The work that sparks the most valuable conversations is often still on the journey.
ESID is where ideas are tested, refined, and strengthened through dialogue with people who truly understand the challenges behind them.

When you’re tackling the hardest questions in IEI, no one can go it alone. That’s why we share.

📌 Abstract submission deadline: 5 May
You still have time to take that final step.
