The meniscus is a piece of cartilage behind the patella that acts as a shock-absorber for the knee joint and provides cushioning between the femur and tibia. Meniscal tears commonly occur in athletes who play in contact sports.

Some of the most common types of meniscal tears include: incomplete tear, radial tear, horizontal tear, bucket handle tear, complex tear and flap tear.
