🥳Midwife Anniversary🥳
(Nederlands onderaan)
Four years ago I became a midwife and I took the Hippocratic Oath, promising that I’d always put my client’s needs first, to respect them, and that I’d be the best midwife I can be, always learning and to pass on this knowledge. (There’s more in this oath that might be a post for another day😉)
Here are four things I’ve learned as a midwife the past four years:
1. Motherrrrrr knows best. 🎶 (Yes, this is a Tangled reference 😜) The client knows best how to carry, birth, nurse, etc. because it is THEIR body. Most of the work we have to do as midwives is guiding them to tap into their power and intuition and to TRUST them.
2. Birth will unfold by itself without any interference from others. Actually, it often helps best to not interfere at all! My role as a midwife is to protect the birth space and, IF nature is harsh, to see it coming and try to prevent harm as much as possible.
3. Preparing for birth is important, but preparing for postpartum is just as, if not more, important. Lots of clients & their partners who have their first baby are completely bamboozled by the intensity of the first few days, weeks, and months postpartum.
4. (Unborn) babies are conscious beings. They hear, they feel, they love, they know. I always try to talk to the baby directly as if they’re right there listening to what we say, because they are. And they feel our intentions. So, I try to be calm and loving for them.
Pictured above is a doptone. I use this device to listen to the unborn baby’s heartbeat during pregnancy and birth.
