It’s not just humans who have lymphatic issues… very similar presentation and treatment 🐴
Lymphangitis in Horses - What You Need to Know
What is lymphangitis?
Lymphangitis is a painful and often sudden swelling of a horse’s leg, most commonly a hindlimb. It occurs when the lymphatic vessels (which normally drain excess fluid and fight infection) become inflamed. The affected leg can appear dramatically swollen, hot, and tender, sometimes all the way from the fetlock up to the thigh. Horses may become lame, and the skin may ooze serum or develop sores in severe cases.
What causes it?
• Infection - Often bacteria enter the skin through small cuts, mud fever lesions, or cracks in the pastern.
• Immune response - The body reacts strongly, leading to inflammation and fluid build-up.
• Other triggers - Occasionally trauma, standing still for long periods, or underlying circulation/lymph drainage issues can contribute.
How is it treated?
Prompt veterinary treatment is essential, as the condition can become chronic or recur. Typical treatments include:
• Antibiotics to fight bacterial infection.
• Anti-inflammatories and pain relief to reduce swelling and discomfort.
• Cold hosing, bandaging, and gentle controlled exercise (if appropriate) to help improve circulation and reduce fluid build-up.
• Good wound care if there are skin breaks or sores.
Some horses experience repeated episodes; early intervention at the first signs of swelling gives the best chance of recovery.
Can it be prevented?
While not every case can be avoided, you can reduce your horse’s risk by:
• Regularly checking legs for cuts, scabs, or skin irritation and treating promptly.
• Managing mud fever and pastern dermatitis carefully.
• Keeping stabling and turnout areas clean and dry to reduce bacterial exposure.
• Encouraging daily movement/exercise to support healthy circulation.
• Maintaining a healthy immune system with good nutrition, parasite control, and dental care.
