Netherlands-based HULO.ai, a startup that develops advanced AI algorithms to tackle water loss, has secured €800K in a fresh round of funding from LUMO Labs

CityLegends has closed a seed funding round close to €1 million with a syndicate of investors, including LeanSquare, LUMO Labs, Imec.istart, DUTCH SPORT TECH FUND and industry expert and angel investor Matthieu De Clercq.

CityLegends is the largest community platform where urban athletes and artists can compete and meet others when, where and with whom they want.

The new funding allows the team to broaden its marketing efforts and user base across Western Europe and kick off its go-to-market strategy on the U.S. West Coast in partnership with urban sports brands.

"CityLegends is all about video-driven content, exploring new spots and connecting with others. We are building the world’s largest community based on the needs of our community," said CEO Jimmy Hermans.

📣 The good news just keeps pouring in! Today we announce LUMO Labs, through its TTT.AI Fund, ROM Utrecht Region and Utrecht Health Seed Fund are investing 900,000 euros in Cordys Analytics. 👏 🙌

The startup is a Dutch healthtech spin-out from the Universitair Medisch Centrum Utrecht (UMCU) and incubated at UtrechtInc.

Cordys Analytics’ AI-powered software platform for electrocardiogram analysis (AI-ECG software) offers a new and innovative solution to detect heart disease earlier and more accurately.

By harnessing the power of advanced deep-learning techniques, this software identifies subtle patterns and abnormalities in ECG data that traditional diagnostic methods often miss. The software supports healthcare professionals in making informed decisions and minimizing hospitalizations and complications associated with untreated heart conditions.

“Integrating the unequalled potential of in healthcare for early detection and prevention not only has a tremendous impact on the quality of life of individual patients, but it also contributes to a more sustainable, affordable healthcare system,” said Andy Lürling, Founding Partner at LUMO Labs. “Cordys’ software has these qualities and – because it is vendor-agnostic – these benefits can scale wide and far. LUMO Labs brought Scientific and Industry Advisory Board member Tom Furness to Eindhoven in June. It was a whirlwind tour of speaking engagements, starting at High Tech Campus Eindhoven with his presentation “The past, present and future of Virtual Reality.”

He also traveled to Utrecht for Dutch Health Week, where he gave a masterclass, followed by a podcast with hosts Jelle Drijver and Jos Hummelen.

Dubbed the “grandfather of VR,” everyone was eager to hear his thoughts on the limitless opportunities immersive technologies provide. (Spoiler alert: we should use VR on the path to transcendence.)

“If VR wants to become as common as traditional glasses, it must solve real problems,” said Tom. In an aging society, loneliness is such a problem. “Normally, the elderly in a nursing home are put on medication so that they do not become depressed or restless,” says Tom. “VR keeps the mind active. The elderly can engage in activities with family members while physically in a nursing home. A centenarian who first got acquainted with VR through us even told us: now I have a reason to live.”

With the recent introduction of tools to the general public, the digital landscape is rapidly changing. As workplaces adopt this technology, it means major changes for many people.

Jobs will be revolutionized, not in a few years, but according to Pere Pérez Ninou, CEO of Metacampus, in the next 12 months.

Months, not years. Metacampus wants to prepare the workforce for these changes.

In May, Metacampus officially launched its continuous learning platform that gets people up to speed on AI, , and the .

“We are actually an onboarding company more than an education company,” says Pere. “You don’t study the blockchain, you use the blockchain. Until you start using the blockchain, you fail to comprehend how it works. It’s the same when talking about digital identity or self-custody.”

The company is based in Spain, but along with its recent product launch, it is also growing its presence in the Netherlands. Bart Geers recently joined the team to grow its base of Dutch customers. “Even in the Netherlands – which is quite a skilled economy – so many people are missing the digital train. We have a society that is becoming a digital layer economy. Big companies will disrupt or be disrupted,” says Geers.

Bart and Pere met with Professor Tom Furness while he was in the Netherlands for a whirlwind circuit of virtual reality events at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, TNW in Amsterdam and meetings in The Hague. He spoke to sold out crowds and adoring fans at every stop. Tom is on our Scientific and Industry Advisory Board and is known as the “grandfather of virtual reality.”

Insights from Tom Furness: “All of these emerging tools fit into the concept of the metaverse and its spatial web. This is where business, education, health and well-being and play all merge into three-dimensional persistent places accessed and accelerated through the next generation of immersive computing technologies such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence. Together, these digital tools can provide the next leap in the growth of our civilization, but only if we are instructed and practiced in using them.”

Deep Tech Connect, initiated by LUMO Labs and organized by ecosystem partners Extreme Tech Challenge and HighTech XL, was an awesome event.

Peter Wennink, CEO of ASML, told the back story about making strategic, critical connections as a startup and then growing into Europe's most valuable tech company.

There were panel discussions on the State of European Deep Tech and the Landscaping of the Generative AI Space.

Investor roundtables were a unique feature with topics near and dear to our hearts, including AI & Data, Semiconductors & Innovation, Techbio and Quantum Computing.

But our favorite part of the day? The Startup Showcase, where LUMO Labs founders Han Dirkx (AlphaBeats), Bart Geerts (Healthplus.ai) and Dzera Kaytati (Maaind) rocked the stage with their pitches.

They wowed the audience of global deep tech movers and shakers with their stories of leveraging emerging technologies to make massive social impact. They demonstrated that, once again, financial return and social return go hand in hand.

Congratulations to Bart Geerts, CEO of Healthplus.ai, whose column is featured in this month’s Federatie Medisch Specialisten.

Bart is an anesthetist, clinical pharmacologist and the founder of LUMO Labs portfolio company Healthplus.ai. He is also president of the Network AI of the Federation, so he knows the subject of AI in patient care well.

From the article: “Ultimately, every AI application is just a tool. I am now working on an application that provides a faster insight into the risk of infections after an operation. At the moment, we can determine whether the patient has an infection on about the fifth day after surgery. With the AI ​​application, we want to clarify the chance of this as early as day one or two.”

AI is evolving at breakneck speed, and the application of AI in patient care is starting to accelerate. But to increase the chance of successful and effective implementations, there is a role for medical specialists, clinical computer scientists, clinical physicists, IT experts and data scientists, the next step in making Dutch healthcare more sustainable.
