On September 6, our colleague Nico joined the 15th edition of the Freshriders, which is a powerful event where sport, health and solidarity meet. Starting and finishing at Kwekerij Overgaag in Honselersdijk, participants cycled 100 or 200 kilometers in support of vital causes.

Tomatoworld proudly sponsored this initiative by buying a box full of delicious vegetables and celebrated this special edition together with fellow riders. The result? An incredible โ‚ฌ108,000 raised for cancer research at Erasmus MC and for local initiatives like the Plusbus.

Every kilometer brings us closer to a future with healthier food and better care for all.

During his internship at Tomatoworld, Frenk Kester, MSc student in Business Information Management at Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam, conducted research on how AI can help reduce the energy consumption of LED lighting in greenhouse horticulture without sacrificing plant health.

Using biosignals from Vivent Biosignals, he developed an AI model that predicts daily whether and how much lighting is needed. Result: up to 6% energy savings, with no loss of plant activity.

An inspiring example of how an internship can contribute to sustainable and data-driven growing season.

What happens when data, technology and horticulture meet? At Tomatoworld in Honselersdijk, we explore how AI, robotics and 5G can support smarter, more efficient and sustainable greenhouse cultivation.

In a recent article by AD, our colleague Jan Enthoven, along with Muhammet Bilgic and Nadia Haifi, Do IoT Fieldlab (TU Delft), explains how innovation is helping to fine-tune growing processes. Examples include: robots that harvest tomatoes, cameras that track growth and ripeness per plant, and a private 5G network enabling fast and reliable data exchange.

These technologies arenโ€™t replacing people, but theyโ€™re reshaping the work. Hopefully this can solve certain problems in the horicultural industry, for example labor shortages.

At Tomatoworld, we demonstrate how technology and horticultural expertise can go hand in hand. Together with partners like Do IoT Fieldlab and the NXTGEN Hightech programme, weโ€™re working towards a resilient, future-proof horticulture sector.
