Altruist is officially 10 today! 🎉 Please watch this message of reflection, thanks and hope from Altruist Founder Dr Andrew Birnie, a highly respected Consultant Dermatologist and Mohs skin cancer surgeon ⬆️

Founders David and Dr Birnie are deeply humbled and truly grateful for all the support Altruist has received since 21st September 2015 🙏

10 years ago, Altruist was founded as a brand with one mission▫️ To reduce the incidence of skin cancer through the increased use of affordable, quality sunscreen together with better education and awareness.

Because "Cost should never be a factor when deciding whether to wear sunscreen, or how much or how often to apply it. Everyone should have a basic right to take the necessary precautions to reduce their risks of skin cancer”

From day one, we have donated 10p from every product sold to help protect people with albinism in Africa from the sun 🌍

To date we have donated over £1.2 million GBP of sunscreens to our charity partners, such as 🌍 We do this because ⬇️

▫️ 100% of children with albinism in Africa will show signs of sun-related skin damage by the age of 10
▫️Half will develop advanced skin cancer before the age of 30
▫️Less than 2% will live to be 40 years old

Afgelopen zomer ging ik voor het eerst echt alleen met mijn dochter op vakantie. Naar het mooie 🇪🇸 dat mijn hart heeft gestolen.

Too much ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or sunbeds is the number one cause of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer. So, it’s important we know how to enjoy the sun safely.

The best way to protect your skin when the sun is strong is to use shade, clothing, and sunscreen together.

Sunscreen is safe to use, and a great line of defence for the parts of your body you can’t cover. But, it doesn’t give 100% protection or mean you can stay out in the sun for longer.

When it comes to sunscreen, pick a sunscreen that works for you – if you like the feel and smell, and it’s affordable, you’re more likely to use it. It doesn’t matter which brand you buy, as long as you choose a product with at least SPF 30 and 4 or 5 stars ⭐

Heatwave + Summer sun reminder ☀️ Do not burn ⚠️ and PLEASE wear high UVB/UVA sunscreen - it is proven to protect skin against sun damage, if worn correctly - because you can still get burnt wearing sunscreen incorrectly ☀️

Please READ & SHARE these safe sun tips ⬇️

🔻 Cover up as the first line of UV protection in the sun
🔻 Wear a broad spectrum, high SPF30+ sunscreen that you can afford to wear lots of
🔻 Wear much more sunscreen than you think you need
🔻 Keep out of peak sun 11am - 3pm
🔻 Avoid sunbathing and never use sunbeds
🔻Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours when in the sun + immediately after getting wet or towelling
🔻 Wear hats, sunglasses and seek shade 👉 Remember, shade alone will not protect as UV bounces
👶 Always keep babies and small children out of the sun + protect kids with UV clothing and swimming clothing as the first line of defense against burning

Why sun protection is so important 👇

⚠️ Just one blistering sunburn in childhood or adolescence can double the risk of melanoma later in life
⚠️ Being burnt 5 or more times in a lifetime can increase the risk of skin cancer by 80%
⚠️ The more UV exposure you have, the greater the DNA damage to the skin and the risk of skin cancer is vastly increased 👉 This damage builds up. It’s not just there for the tan or the summer, the damage is for life

Protecting your skin can reduce your likelihood of developing skin cancers 🙏
