Sigma Investments is the student investment club of the School of Business and Economics of Maastricht University. Sigma Investment was founded in 1976 by students of Maastricht University, it has since been Sigma’s goal to bridge the gap between theoretical academia and the world of professional finance. It is one of the oldest student run groups at Maastricht University, and as such has a rich h

istory which is built on year after year. This objective is achieved in our weekly meetings during which we discuss the most recent market developments and consider changes in our portfolio composition. Students are given the opportunity to gain hands-on experience on real trading with their own money. Furthermore, the investment club organizes and engages in professional events, such as Maastricht Business Days, wine tastings and interesting guest lectures.

Last Monday we welcomed in the halls of SBE to host a workshop in the form of a case study about financing criteria in the healthcare industry. After a short company introduction, roughly 80 students worked in teams and presented their analysis and findings to the audience!

Special thanks to Raymond Smeets, Mila Wubben, and Nino Hogervorst for making their way to SBE and guiding us through the case study!

We hosted our final weekly meeting of this semester yesterday in the Statenzaal, at the law faculty of Maastricht University.

The session was kicked off with a valuation flash round where every analyst team presented an updated valuation of one stock. Starting with the goods team, they pitched Ahold Delhaize and readjusted the target price to 29€. Therefore, the paid-in members decided to keep the stock in the portfolio.

The team followed with Deutsche Post AG. As a leader in global mail and logistics, the team valued the company at 54,26€ per share, which led to the paid-in members voting to hold the position.

After this, the team updated their valuation of Equinix. Due to the volatile industry, they decreased the target price to $699. The majority of the paid-in members still decided not to sell the stock off.

The team reevaluated Netflix. Even though the macroeconomic setting is unstable, the stock shows a possible undervaluation with a potential upside of 70% from the current price. The paid-in members therefore decided to keep the stock in the portfolio.

Finally, the team chose United Healthcare for their reevaluation. The strong market and potential growth, led to an increase in implied valuation upside of 17%, which in turn convinced the paid-in members to hold the stock.

After a short break, we were delighted to welcome Joe Fuss, an alumnus of SBE and former board member at Sigma investments, as our final guest speaker of this semester. He spoke about his work at Orange Capital partners in real estate valuation and investing. Additionally, Joe showed an example valuation of a potential investment and which metrics to look at in a spreadsheet.

We would like to thank all of you for your support during this semester and we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. Success with your exams!!

Yesterday, on the 9th of May, we hosted our fourth weekly meeting of this Period 5 in the Law faculty of Maastricht University.

After the portfolio update, the financial services team presented the first divestment pitch of this period. Joschua, Moritz, Luis
, Giacomo, and Diana chose London Stock Exchange for this potential sell off. The stock’s high share in the portfolio and the current macroeconomic situation, makes this an ideal time for a partial divestment of the stock. The paid-in members accordingly voted in favor of this decision.

It was followed by a team update by the risk and sustainability teams. Both teams reflected on what has been done and achieved so far and provided a future outlook on aspects that could be improved.

We hope you enjoyed the meeting, and we are looking forward to seeing you next Monday, the 16th of May from 19:00 to 21:00, in the Statenzaal.

This Wednesday our consumer goods and healthcare team presented their analyses of two potential stocks to add to our portfolio.

The consumer goods team took the lead with the first pitch of the day. Benedict, Adrian, Damian, Gianluca, and Osemudiame pitched the company DIAGEO. The company would diversify the portfolio’s beverage exposure in a high growth potential market. The paid-in members voted against buying the stock.

After a short break, the healthcare team consisting of Pierre-Francois, Paulina, Mira, Hannah, and Killian, chose Teladoc Health for their pitch. The company’s network size, as well as the market growth, create an opportunity for high potential. Therefore, the paid-in members voted in favor of adding the stock to our portfolio.

We hope you enjoyed the meeting, and we are looking forward to seeing you again next Monday, the 9th of June, from 7-9pm at the Law faculty in the Statenzaal. Visit our website for access the full slide deck! (link in bio)
