Hoe meet je iets wat in de ruimte gebeurt, maar niet te zien is? Bij de ETpathfinder in Maastricht werken onderzoekers aan de ontwikkeling van de Einstein Telescope. Het is een revolutionair project dat ons meer kan leren over gebeurtenissen in de ruimte. Jessica Steinlecher, onderzoeker en specialist in precisietechnologie, leidt het werk aan een belangrijk onderdeel: de spiegels. In dit interview vertelt ze hoe deze spiegels bijzondere, niet-zichtbare gebeurtenissen in de ruimte zichtbaar maken.

How do you measure something that happens out in space and cannot be seen by the naked eye? At ETpathfinder in Maastricht, researchers are working on the development of the Einstein Telescope: a revolutionary project that could teach us more about what exactly is going on in space. Jessica Steinlecher, researcher and precision technology specialist, is in charge of the work taking place on a key component: the mirrors. In this interview, she tells us more about how these mirrors allow us to view extraordinary, invisible events in space.

Een traan bestaat uit meer dan alleen water en zout. Uit één druppel kunnen meer dan honderd stoffen geanalyseerd worden. Zoals biomarkers die de aanwezigheid van ziekten als Alzheimer of Huntington verraden. Marlies Gijs, biochemicus van het Maastricht UMC+ , ontwikkelt een zelftest voor traanonderzoek.

Tears are made up of more than just water and salt. A single tear contains more than a hundred substances to be analyzed such as biomarkers that can reveal the presence of diseases like Alzheimer’s or Huntington’s. Marlies Gijs, a biochemist at Maastricht UMC+ hospital, is developing a self-test for tears.

Eén van de vijf Nederlandse RegMed XB pilotlijnen voor tissue engineering staat in Maastricht. ReGEN Biomedical, ontstaan vanuit Universiteit Maastricht, ontwikkelt en bouwt een nieuwe generatie productieapparatuur voor regeneratieve therapieën. In nauwe samenwerking met MERLN, CARIM en technologiepartner Demcon werken zij aan de opschaling naar industriële productie van weefsels. Geen klassieke fabriek met lawaaierige machines, maar een hypermoderne productiestraat met cleanrooms waar biologie en engineering samenkomen.

One of the five Dutch RegMed XB pilot lines for tissue engineering is located in Maastricht. ReGEN Biomedical, founded from Maastricht University, is building the next generation of production equipment for regenerative therapies. Together with MERLN, CARIM and technology partner Demcon they focus on scaling up to industrial tissue production. Not a traditional factory with noisy machines, but a state-of-the-art cleanroom production line where biology and engineering meet.

Misschien kan Brightlands Life Sciences Ventures (BLSV) iets betekenen. Dit investeringsfonds werd in 2016 opgericht om startups en spinoffs uit Universiteit Maastricht en Maastricht UMC+ te ondersteunen met kapitaal én begeleiding richting de markt. Tijdens een van de laatste zomerdagen stond de LIOF On Tour bus op het terrein van Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus. De slotstop van deze zomerse tour.

LIOF bestaat 50 jaar en dat werd gevierd met een zomer pop-up vol inspiratie. Ondernemers konden langslopen om hun plannen en uitdagingen te delen en in gesprek te gaan over financiering, innovatie en internationaal ondernemen. Uiteraard met een goede koffie en een verfrissende snack erbij.

On one of the final summer days, the LIOF On Tour bus visited Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus, marking the closing stop of this summer tour.

Celebrating 50 years of LIOF, the summer pop-up was all about inspiration. Entrepreneurs could stop by to share their plans and challenges, and engage in conversations about funding, innovation, and international business. All accompanied by good coffee and a refreshing snack.
